The Xed out rectangular decal on the air cleaner - two of my DB cars have these! Wonder if dealers applied them like the Caution Fan decal.

No that was a decal that came with an aftermarket/retrofit smog system from the late 70's- 80's

Can't read it but it might have been from the Nox kit that smog stations/test sites were selling at one point. They seemed to have new systems available every year or so - so it was always a game to see what you had to do to pass. You had to get creative at times  ::)

Hi Jeff, I'm just getting around to installing some of these decals and just had a quick question. In the two-part picture for the service specifications, where is the approximate location shown in the top part of the picture? It's hard to tell because I only see part of the one hose as a reference. Thanks!


The landmarks are - to the far  right the seam is the radiator support to the drivers side inner fender panel and the top edge is the inner fender panel that has a 90 degree bend out to the fender edge

Yep the kit and the system I remembered. There were a number of "kits" marketed under the Kar-Kit name. Another that I used annually or bi-annual for a number of years was included a couple of vacuum plugs and a clear decal you put over the speedo meter. Guess we could start another thread of all the crazy aftermarket emission stickers but not sure if it fits with the focus we have here. Don't want to take any more of the focus off the request made in this thread ;)

In my case, it is for a 1970 Mach 1 with 351 Cleveland 4V. My car was built on 12/19/69 (50th birthday coming up!). Any pics of the sticker locations are appreciated. My intent is to put as many stickers back on the car in the right places as possible. I'm not necessarily concerned about ones that were temporary - just the main ones like trunk, air cleaner, door jams, etc.

Kinda off topic, and can't help with the sticker locations (all my originals have been removed over the years), but found it interesting your car rolled off the line at Metuchen about 2 weeks after mine. My car was built 3 Dec '69 - a "standard" sportsroof with a few nice options.

Okay thanks. From those additional pictures, it looks like all of them are in roughly the same location, which was very clear on the other half of the last picture. I was just trying to make sure it wasn't two totally different locations that were used. In any case, though, the location to the right of those 3 bolts is a great spot for me to put the decal. It's totally clear in that area. Thanks again, and sorry for the confusion on my part :-)

Very cool. Mine was modestly equipped but I love the grabber blue and 351c/4v combo! I guess you could say we’re from the same “graduating class” 🙂. All the best to you as well!

$ometime$ all you had to do to pa$$ a $mog te$t wa$ ?ooperate with the right technician to get an "EXEMPT" sticker.

Just saying my big block Chevelle with it's COWL INDUCTION hood got an "EXEMPT" sticker and that changed the playing field.

Depended on what year we're discussing and the your local governing Air Resources Board  ( in some years and cases) and there are a ton of those

Remember a period where a friend had a new Mustang Cobra that had never been driven but was purchased by my friend as the second owner and CA would not let him register it.

In another car (66 K code) there was a period where since the car did not have a thermactor system the state required us to drill a hole in the original intake manifold and install a device in order to register it. 

Yes often it helped if you got an operator or a referee just like today. Today take a little more work. Other challenge I've had over the years is that I've always "looked" like I could be a government worker - ie undercover plant from BAR to catch the shops breaking the law and handing our fines. To the point (example) I had a late 80's T-Bord for the wife that I had to smog and the station freaked out that the gas cap had a Mustang emblem on it (behind the gas door) I got by after I explained I was not an inspector and not from BAR by showing my work card and ID from the FD
