I dont remember if these threaded inserts are called nut serts but was 3 of them typical for 68 IIRC 67 only used 2.

It appears to me that one has been added.

One of the nut inserts has been added/replaced . The odd one is not factory by its appearance.

https://www.428cobrajet.org/forum/index.php?topic=26903.0 I try not to place the same inquiry at two different places at once as it can become confusing but it seemed important to in this case as I thought this was a racing modification.

Good to know. I looked at our 68 BB manual car and the back riv-nut is missing. Looks like I will have to track down one.

Would not suggest adding one if your car only has two. Read reply #8 below

Took a quick look only through my 68 Dearborn cars for the holes and inserts and found only two inserts (one unfilled hole) on all of the visible examples. Did have one that is difficult to make out and it may have three.

To show the span of this quick look partial Vin's are posted below. Of course with most cars the area is not visible - engine, master cylinder and the like get in the way. All the following unrestored, apart, in a yard, basically not messed with it appears

8F02R1982xx
8F01C2107xx
8F02R2068xx

8F03C1985xx - may have had three

Started to go through San Jose and the pattern (only two) was how it started out. Will get back to it but changed focus since the OP has a Dearborn R code

I am a bit confused, when I read the thread on the CJ forum I thought the conclusion was that BB manual cars used the back two holes. I also checked the 68 assembly manual and found it call for 3 rivnuts on the 390 manual. looking at the VINs you listed there may not be a manual BB car there.

Our 68 S code is a 8-24 67 San Jose car. I did not disassemble it so I do not know if only one bolt was holding the rail bracket.

Marty, the picture I posted is a 7/18/68 build car.

Guess I should restate my findings and what I wrote.  Don't get it clear or correct every time so will try again :(

It appears that in at least the 68 Dearborn cars had the forward two rivets installed on every body that was built. Not sure why Ford spent the dollars since it seems to be opposite from what they normally did. Try and save where ever possible. Likely the stamping plant that made the frame rail added them there. The additional one (based on details so far) likely was added at the car assembly plant. Would be interesting to see if that rear one was different in shape or design from the other two though it would never have been seen on a fully assembled car.

Struck out the "don't add..." in the post above.

Did check through my 68 San Jose and NJ cars and they followed the same pattern. All cars with two forward and only the rear one installed if the options required it
