That is a 65 type Rally Pac installed on a 66 Mustang. The Ford tach was wired under the dash, "inline" with the resistance wire. (It goes to the coil terminal marked BATT.) To verify the type of tach, you need to to look at the coil. It should have three wires, the large diameter "spark" to the distributor top, one to the distributor (marked DIST) side and BATT. If that's all of the wires there are, your Rally Pac is probably an original. An aftermarket tach in a Rally Pac adds that other wire and is not wired "inline".

Was there an extra wire on the coil that went thru the firewall to the tach?

A rally pack (style) could have been what the dealer had on the shelf and sold to an early owner rather than ordering (moving old stock) a newer version. Of course plenty of people may interject to you at shows that you have the "wrong" one  ::)

Yes
In that case, it is probably a reproduction. Remove the clock cover and see if there is a Ford part number.

The easiest way to identify if the Rally Pac is an OEM (vs. a repro) is to take the tach out of the camera case black housing.  Here is a pic of the back of a 1965 style rally pac tach.  It has a total of 3 wires (two for the tach (1 red and 1 black) and one for the light bulb (blue with a red stripe).  If there are more than 2 wires for the tach is it either a repro or it has been rebuilt/modified.  In addition the back of the housing will have a faint ink stamp.  See attached photo.

It looks that it was modified long time ago. All I know on the cars history it was purchased used in 1970 at a ford dealer.
