Undercoating
« on: December 05, 2010, 08:29:06 PM »
Was undercoating ever installed in the factory or was this strictly an after market add?  The car was built in San Jose.

Undercoating was never applied at the factory. Sound deadener was used in specific locations depending on year, plant, model of car and worker

I assume that you have a 67 where the undercarriage or floors are coated.

It is a 68 Fastback and has undercoating in the fender wells and floor pan area (built in San Jose).

We refer to that product as sound deadener (as Ford did) so not to confuse it with undercoating ;)

The sound deadener was applied (all but the front wheelwells) before body color was applied - in some plants and years before primer was applied) in the rear wheelwells, interior trunk (quarter panel) surfaces, and a couple of spots in the interior to reduce road noises as well as what is referred to as the oil can or drum noises.
