Choke Hose bracket finish
« on: October 17, 2019, 04:02:33 PM »
I have a 66 Dearborn Hardtop with a 289 2v V8 engine and three speed transmission.
It was scheduled for build in February 1966 if that is important.
I was cleaning the bracket for the choke  that holds the heater hose against it to facilitate warm starts.
I noticed there appears to be some gold cad plating on the part.
Is this correct?
Or did this part get swapped out sometime in the years before I purchased the car?

It should look like this. The finish is more commonly known as "gold zinc".

I've never tried this myself but I remembered reading an article in Hemmings at one point that described a process to DIY.

They recommended a kit sold by www.caswellplating.com

I need mine done as well. It currently has the cad looking paint on it which is decent. We just tried some of caswells black oxide and didn't have the greatest results. even after oiling they rusted up pretty fast. I wonder if this stuff is any good.

Zinc dichromate looks different - especially on items later than hardware like nuts and blots. Would not suggest doing dichromate in a home enviroment. Stuff is really nasty - and I ran into burning buildings weekly and getting shot at a few times so I'm use to taking chances  ::)
