1967 Dearborn Paint Inspector Markings Discussion
« on: October 05, 2019, 08:08:48 PM »
The subject was renewed in another thread and thought it might be a good idea to share location, specific letter and details related related to the year and plant.  If needed we can do other threads for other years.

What I've documented and found over the last 40 years or so is that most of the inspectors assigned to the different task typically applied a small square paper sticker to a predetermined (by the inspectors) location on the car.

For 67 Dearborn I've seen them applied to the driver's side shock tower surface (shown below), cowl - either driver's or passenger side depending on the inspector and in the trunk applied to the underside of the trunk lid towards the drivers side.

In addition individual inspectors were identified on the stickers, on at least the ones that are still legible, by a number during this production year. Other years at Dearborn used different methods to identify which inspectors applied which stickers but that is another subject.

This is a difficult subject IMHO in that the location of the sticker is either a result of a specific shift/inspector assigned that day and or when the car was built - most likely both.  Since Cougars and Mustangs were both assembled and inspected by the same workers this allows us to look at each for clues and evidence

Sorry there are not allow of examples. Since they were paper stickers they didn't hold up well over time and often only the adhesive or a shadow is left after many years of exposure.

Engine compartment - Upper left picture/example is from 7F01C1291xx. Outlined square shows where another was applied though missing when the picture was taken.
Sorry don't have any information on the example in the lower right to place it in the production year.

The "F" is an interesting one. It appears that the location depended allot by shift and or inspector. Don't know without more data points

Don't have any VIN or dates for these first two examples though we know each are Cougars - just don't know if these are both early cars or not

For this example these are applied to the trunk lid. Top left - 7F200xxx , Upper right - 7F210xxx, No VINs or dates for the lower two though the lower right is a Cougar example.

As always hope this helps

Did want to add that I've not yet seen a 67 Dearborn car with inspector 603 and his ink stamp. It would not surprise me to find a couple of cars marked that way - of course missing the corresponding sticker. As discussed in other threads I believe this is an inspector that sometimes filled in - prior paint inspector from the earlier 60's that refused to use anything but his original ink stamp. Do have one example with the double "W" ink stamp similar to what we see used (along with other double letters) typically in 71-73. The double "W" also shows up as a sticker in other years at this plant but don't want to get off thread
