Shift Lever Installation - 1968 4 Speed Non-Console
« on: October 05, 2019, 11:09:30 AM »
I'm trying to replace an aftermarket Hurst shifter that was installed in a 1968 S-Code with the correct assembly.  Car has a standard interior and no center console.  If I'm reading the other posts correctly, this is how it should be installed:

1. Rubber linkage boot comes up through the trans tunnel and lip lies against the top of the tunnel.
2. Shifter boot sandwiches the linkage boot and is screwed into the tunnel.
3. Carpet is cut to the inner square of the shifter boot to cover the screws.
4. There is no trim bezel installed over the carpet.

Also have a question about the linkage boot.  Doesn't seem intuitive on how it fits over the linkage rods.  Does anyone have a picture of the correct installation?

Appreciate any assistance you can provide...thanks!

Still looking for the correct answer on this one.  I think I've figured out everything except whether or not there was a trim bezel around the shifter boot.  What I'm tracking is the following:

1. Rubber linkage boot comes up through the floor and lies flat on the top of the tunnel
2. Shifter boot goes on top of the linkage boot and is secured with the screws sandwiching the lip of the linkage boot
3. Carpet goes over the top of the shifter boot and is trimmed to the diameter of the inner square (covering screws)
4. No trim bezel is installed over the carpet?

Have seen some photos with fairly original cars set up both with and without a trim bezel.

Car is an early 68 SJ 4 Speed with a std interior.

Appreciate any assistance...thanks!

There should be a flat chrome bezel that fits over the shifter boot.
