Dead 65/66/67 group 22 Auolite Battery
« on: December 02, 2010, 10:26:37 AM »
You read it, I need a Group 22 Autolite battery.  It will NOT be like the repop Group 27 repop readily available.  The 65/66/67 Autolites are different than the current repops.

This battery will have the legal mombo-jumbo cast in between the posts.  I don't even need the caps, but will take them if they are there.

Thank you

Which is funny as there are so many restored 65/66/67 Mustangs (and other Fords) that came with this battery.  Gee, there are two different Autolite oil filter repops, , and the rotunda one, how about some correct batteries?

So, exactly what Mustangs came from the factory with the 22F battery? are there truely enough folks out there needing one for Antique battery to make them? I don't think I've ever seen a 22F Motorcraft.

The standard battery for pretty much all early Mustangs was a 22F.  The 24F was an optional battery.

Does anyone have pictures of the 22F and 24F?

The original group 22 battery on e-bay looks like the like the current reproduction Group 24 unit. The group 22 appears smaller in size and I understand that. Did the group 24 look like the group 22?

I am a little confused by your post but maybe this will answer your question. The battery in the auction is a correct dimensional size for the smaller group 22 battery. It is of the style used in 1968 production and beyond. That 1968 style is what the current group 24 reproduction battery is modeled after. These 68 and beyond style group 22 batteries  were most notably used in base model 1969 GT350's and base model Boss 302's. I hope this answer your question .

So I can assume that the information posted by the person selling the battery on e-bay is incorrect. Does anyone have a good picture of a group 22 or group 24 battery that was used by Ford during the 1965/66 period. My 1965 and 1966 MPC catalog lists four different  batteries that were available during that time period.

Technically if you read the description every sentence is correct . The battery will work in 66,67 applications . You can use it in concours completion .etc. It is better then a group 24 on a car that was supposed to come with a 22. No statement that it was assemblyline  made.  68/69 assemblyline batteries had a different tag that did not include put into service punch out dots. The punch out dots were only on  service replacement batteries for warranty purposes. It is a extremely nice ,very rare 68,69 service replacement battery which is the next best thing .

I must be missing something in the add. Under Items Specifies it states "NOS 1965-68 Autolite 22FC group22 series battery perfect for that concours restoration.  1967 date code on bottom of case. A rare find 45.00 shipping". There is no mention of 1968/ 69  Mustangs

If you have a window sticker for your car that does not have 'HEAVY DUTY BATTERY', then it most likely would have come with a group 22F battery.  Would you rather have a reproduction 24F or a service replacement OEM 22F?  MCA hasn't been deducting for the incorrect 24F that is in every 65-67 concours car, so why be so critical of the one advertised for sale?  Most of us that have been judging for a long time know good and well that the absolute correct 22F or 24F for a 65-67 is one of the most coveted and unobtainable parts.

I certainly would not deduct for the battery in the auction on a concours car according to the current judging standards.  MCA Thoroughbred or SAAC Premiere would be a different story and I'm sure B. Perkins would agree.
