Body code help - 69 63D
« on: September 09, 2019, 02:25:50 PM »
I've been searching for a while now for the answer to a very tough question.
On my 69' Mustang E'  fastback the body/interior code is normally 63 A-B- or C  letters reference to the interior as standard , deluxe, and Mach1.    On my E' it is 63D and it came with black standard interior.   Does anyone have any insight ?
The only thing coming to my mind is that when I took the entire car down to bare metal including the engine bay someone in the past had rattle canned the engine bay.  Very badly at that with many many runs and sags and it was flaking off.  While removing the black underneath was the body color (Silver Jade). Even under the rubber seal on top of the radiator support I pulled the original staples to sand and clean there also.   Silver Jade was on the entire car.  Hopefully someone has some insight to the D question.   Marty report backs up the 63D also.  Thanks

Should've added that I had ran across a Technical Bulletin Sheet from 69'.   It had the engine adjustment specs such as timing and other adjustment specs specifically marked 63D body codes.   Like I said though,  5 years of searching and I have nothing.   It is also stamped in the buck tag and drivers door tag.   Some weird Mustang E' thing I am sure but would love to know the meaning of it.

I wonder why Ford didn't just skip over the "D" and go straight (-6) to the "E"...

Sounds like (for some reason) they choose to identify this certain model by a different code. I two wonder, since the D had been and was being used for bench seat why that didn't give it a different code but someone had a reason - don't know if it was a good or poor choice. You mention a TSB related - do you happen to have the number of the article available. Would like to review it (have pretty much all of the TSB's) for this and other details I need an answer to for your other item

Not that unusual though not typical since it was a waste of paint, time and effort. Guess one possibility was that it was a new guy or one not normally tasked with applying the exterior color on cars on the Mustang line. Maybe a fill in from another line where a full paint job was standard practice

On a more serious note, I would ask Kevin Marti for help. I looked at the General Statistics in his Numbers book and see  that 63D is blank for 1969 indicating to me that NONE were made  (page 8, Mustang, By The Numbers).

On that same page, 65D designates the use of Decor Bench in the hardtop body (not in sportsroof nor convertible).

Obviously, something unique going on here but I was under the impression  that any RPO would be in the Stats that Kevin has and the Mustang E is for sure a regular production option.

On edit~fixed typos

I have to ask.

Why do you have a single quote mark after the E in your sig?

Ford seems to like Mustang "E", as in the data sheet just posted.

It's the only way I've ever seen it written including on the car quarter panels.

E' would denote "E single quote", "E prime" or "E number of feet" to name a few.

Linguistically, it needs the other single quote.

Here is pic I found of another E which includes both single quotes.

Thanks for the education.
Look at the effort you made proving a grammar mistake.  Focus on the "D" not the missing ' .

Marty report backs up the 63D also.

Marti reports commonly include a description of these codes.  What does your Marti report actually say? That may be your best source of information.

I don't see "63D" listed in the 1969 Ford shop manual as a Mustang body style code. It was used in 1968 to identify the Mustang sportsroof with a deluxe bench seat. In 1969, the shop manual lists it for the 1969 Torino GT 2-door fastback with bucket seats. Maybe that's a clue.

Nothing else on the Marti Report.
Thinking it's an engine related item but cannot find anything for sure.
