1965 Black interior paint
« on: August 02, 2019, 01:59:24 AM »
Hi,

Im looking to redo my dash and steering column (black).  Whats the best brand to us, i was thinking of just using rattle cans.  I saw NPD has a lacquer, would this be the correct color and sheen.  What kind of prep is needed when applying lacquer, part of the steering column is in bare metal, should I etch prime it then spray the black over it?

Thanks

I attached a photo for reference, the glossy metal part at top really isn't that glossy in person, a lot of sun and reflections...

I used NPD's interior lacquer paint on my car for everything and I have to say I was super impressed with the results, had just the correct amount of orange peel and such. One thing though I did strip everything down to bare metal and as well as all the fiberglass down to the original surface. I did use an etch primer on the dash, but not on the column and had much better results on the bare metal. One thing I will say about that paint though is you absolutely have to follow the instructions on the back, make sure it's warm, but not too warm out with low humidity, and NO wind at all where you are painting. It's not so much about application as much as about the drying in-between coats. I had a couple bad experiences with that paint where it was a little too hot when I painted and got this spider webbing crackling effect while it was drying between coats, this happen on another day when it was windy out to and I had the garage open to allow venting and I guess some wind was blowing and the same thing happened, was kind of a nightmare but it all worked out in the end and was super happy with the result and color and sheen of the final.

I would suggest the day you are going to paint, you do a couple test runs on a metal panel and do the full three light coats and make sure you get good result before just going for it on the final pieces... that's what I did the second time I did it and everything worked great (if at first you don't succeed, try, try again ;)

Good luck,

Your paint job looks great.  I will try it on the bare metal, like you suggest.

Thx,

Mark

I've been using this stuff for 30+ years....and swear by it..  It's the old KRYLON 1613  "Original" Acrylic-Lacquer Formula...sold under the "INDUSTRIAL" Label today because of "NANNY" EPA Requirements...no longer sold in Public stores...but its still available through Industrial outlets like GRAINGER's, etc.

I always use a good light primer coat no matter what.... I have found.

Some times old cans leak propellant gas . I saw a trick video on U tube for re pressurizing a spray can that lost its gas. Basically involved using a cut off tire valve stem and forcing the rubber stem over the can with the nozzle taken off and given it a squirt or two of air like filling a tire to replenish the propellant. I have not tried it but was a cool idea. I will try it the next time I come across a older can that is still half full and needs some gas rather then throw it in the trash . I would suggest caution and only do quick short squirts of air so as not to over pressurize a can.

+1 on the Krylon Industrial 1613, especially for the Engine Compartment. For the Interior, however, I have a different preference. Back in the early 80's, I was re-doing (not restoring at that time, just "re-doing") my '66, I still wanted the "correct" Interior Paint. To my surprise, I found that the Black Interior Paint was still available from Ford in 15 oz spray cans. I bought 10 or so. This Black was used in the 50's, 60's, 70's and probably longer. But realizing that this paint may not store well over time (as Bob mentioned, lose pressure), or dry up), I decided to see if I could find a spray paint that might have a chance of being available "down the road". I tried quite a few different brands, and interestingly, came up with Krylon Satin. Ironically, this has a similar code as the semi-flat 1613 (actually K01613), and is 51613. It is, at least to my eyes, just about as close as one can get to the Ford M4J 1724 Black Interior Paint. The Krylon Satin Black has changed names over the years (Indoor/Outdoor, ColorMaster, etc.), but the color appears the same. I have purchased and use some of this as recently as within the last 6 months, and at $4.49 per can, it's hard to go wrong. I will use it on my '66 when I restore it, if my Ford Paint hasn't made it through the years.

I am a retired painter from Ford in Dearborn.  painted show cars and prototypes.  I painted Gary's worlds fair mustang with this paint.  I know how to store it.  4 cans per case.

Correction:  6 cans per case.  Senior moment.  My dad was a painter at Ford in Dearborn from 1948-1978.  Me:  1973-2003.  My son is starting his 20 years at Ford in Dearborn.  Will you be in Fredericksburg?  We fly in Thursday.

Bob, The problem with the "Bullet Nose Top Cap" Newer Krylon that is sold everywhere is that its nowhere near as good as the Industrial "Acryli-Quik" 1613.  The difference? The New 1613 is Enamel.  The old Industrial 1613 that I put a weblink to up above is Acrylic Laquer.  The wear and spray characteristics of both are like night and day....
