1968 Shelby Rally Stripes
« on: July 24, 2019, 04:35:00 PM »
Hi Guys
Did any 68 Shelby's come from factory with Rally stripes or was this completed at the dealership?
Did the dealer paint them on or were they decals like the GT stripes?

I know my Shelby did not come with Rally stripes but i really love the look and want to add them on when i restore it , Would that be a big mistake?

Thanks in advance

Cars did not come from the factory with dealer “rallye stripes”

Its unlikely many dealers would have done this either. They interfere with the SHELBY lettering.

Hey, its your car if you like them, go for it.  Period correct, would be to paint them on.

I should also add, if you are showing the car it may not be acceptable.

Thanks !  I love your website but did not find much on the actual Rally strips. So all these Shelby’s  out there with rally stripes are not technically correct ?

Since they were not originally applied that is why Pete's site doesn't have much. Unless he did a page on period aftermarket modifications. But then some viewers might not read the small print and only see the pictures  ::)

As far as originally/restored  - they are not correct.

I have advised many people in the past that after you paint your car to live with it awhile with out the over the top stripes. You can always paint the stripes on later . Once they are painted on turning back the clock is a very expensive proposition if you decide you do not want them later. Relative to my experiences the many I have advised, most chose after waiting to not every paint the rally strips on . Some did.   From a market stand point all other things being equal the non stripe car is typically easier to sell and brings more money because the rally stripes were not original from the factory.Originality is the number one concern for people buying a classic Shelby. It isn't important to some but to most it is. The dealer claim is rarely if ever provable and is typically seen as a ploy of a owner trying to justify a non original item on a car. In the end do what makes you happy . At least if you wait and decide to paint it on later you can feel confident that you made a informed decision.

I restored my own car and decided to go bone stock, but everyone can make their own choices.
