Topic: Radio Change Over?

Couldn't find anything in the search as far as a change over date but would a early June build SJ car have a radio that started with a 6 or a 5?  The unrestored thread on 5F09C3658xx shows a 5 but the word deluxe is on the chrome trim plate.  Didnt know if that was original or not.

My car is about 2 weeks earlier than yours and my radio starts with 6. I believe that it is original to the car.

Conventional wisdom has determined that 64-65 radios start with a 6, and 66 radios with a 5. It also depends on the stamping.

Guess we can collect and see if production confirms what has been general opinion by adding this to the running changes list.

Jim is right, 65’s generally start with a 6 and 66’s start with a 5. My Oct 64 starts with a 6. Wondering what my June of 65 would start with as it is late.

For trivia sake why was this? I believe I read somewhere that this was because of the expansion of radio frequencies. is this true?

It's the lettering on the dial. Just a quick way to ID a 65-66 radio.

I vaguely remember that the lowest USA AM frequency was 550khz. Frequencies in other countries AM band started at 540khz. There was another band lower than that at one time, but the FCC here re-assigned any stations that used it, to a higher frequency. The same at the upper end, 1550 was the highest, then 1610 became the highest.

I had a "Deluxe" labeled radio from a 65' and was told it was aftermarket from back in the day. It had a screw type adjustment on the side???   Can anyone produce literature of this "deluxe" labeled radio being factory?
