68 Seat Back failures
« on: July 07, 2019, 03:49:35 PM »
On the forth I was all set to give the grandsons a ride in the 68 HCS, I pushed in the clutch and ended up in the back set with my grandson.
I have known about the Ford TSB on seat back failures but have not experienced one my self. I am thankful that this did not happen in traffic or 1000 miles from home.
I just bought the Ford no weld service repair part. At least I should not have to remove very much upholstery.

Not one of Ford's better ideas. Glad to hear the seat back was the only thing damaged.

I've never experienced the failure, but I have welded the re-call brackets to the seat frames before recovering them.  Just a pre-caution I've taken!

Marty, you've experienced some misfortunes recently, but have had good luck with them!

I do not believe much in luck.  I prefer to believe it is blessed.

Happened to my dad in our 68 while he was driving back in the day.   Clutch with manual steering.  He said it was fun trying to get it home.  Took the seat to a local welder and fixed it.  A couple months later, Ford put out the recall.  That 45 year old repair is still in place.

Any chance one of you could post a picture of the affected area? Would like to reinforce mine before my new upholstery goes on.

As a start this thread might be helpful. Found using the search using "68 Seat back recall)

Recall and reproduction of the recall parts. Might save some time and provide a strong repair/insurance

I looked thru all my pics of my seat restore.  I have a picture of the passenger side (which was never broken), but did not have anything from the repair of the drivers side.  You are just as well off using the kit that's supplied these days.  No one will ever see it.

Thanks! I’ll be sure to give mine a good inspection when I get to the upholstery.
