1968 Rally wheels
« on: June 25, 2019, 06:49:40 PM »
I just purchased a set of NOS 1968 Mustang Rally wheels, center caps, and trim rings. Attached are some photos and I'm hoping someone can identify when the wheels were produced? I found these at a local garage sale amongst other NOS parts. I was honestly shocked to find such a set in this great condition having been stored for the past 25-30 years. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think your best bet from the pictures provided is the date by the valve stem on the outer rim. That will at provide the date that part of the wheel was stamped but not the exact date the wheel was fully assembled and painted.

Part number/stamp on the back side of the hub cap is interesting. Recall allot of paper stickers used on these items as part of the service replacement system. Others may have seen this before - we'll see

Very nice find

So I see what appears to be a 14 then a 6J near the valve stem area? Would you suspect this decodes as, of course 14 for 14” rim, and 6J for 76’ or 86’ year of production and J for September?

I think the date code is D, not sure how that would decode. The rim size is 14 X 6J, a typical size used for E70 or F70 X 14 tires in 1968.

Thanks roycep!

So I see number stamping on the inside rim itself (near the rivets used to combine the wheel pieces) along with the stamping KELSEY and CANADA. There are a bunch of numbers/stampings there. Would this be where the date code exists?
