Water pump and timing cover
« on: June 20, 2019, 02:54:20 PM »
I have a 1965 289 2 barrel C code. convertible with alternator and power steering.  August 6 build date  Looking to put put on the correct water pump and timing cover that would have been put on by the factory.  Can anyone help me with the part numbers and casting dates I should be looking for when looking for these parts.  I am new to this and would appreciate any help or guidance.  If you need more info about my car or engine please let me know.

First, welcome to the forum.
To narrow down the "date", you need to reference the engine assembly date. It is located on an extension (aka boss) on the block near the distributor. Pictures are from a 66 GT K Fastback built in San Jose in Oct 1965 with the engine build of August 23, 1965 (cast Aug 11, 65). The format is year, month, day, inspector/assembler - 5H11Z.

Was the car built August of 65 or August of 64? When was the changeover to 66 production?

The waterpump would most likely be the C5 marked cast iron pump. They were only used for a few months at the end of 65 production so they can be hard to find . Typical 66 production cars used the C6 marked cast iron pump. They can be expensive to source . This is not to be confused with the aluminum C5 marked waterpump which was used prior to the cast iron version. For frame of reference do not walk away from a core needing rebuilt that is 200.00 or less . Rebuilt C5 cast iron pumps typically sell in the 3-400.00  range because of the rarity and the applications they were used on. 65 GT350 and 66 GT350 (carryover cars) use them  ;) .

Pretty sure the C5AE pumps are aluminum. C5OE is cast iron.

Car was built Aug. 1965.  San Jose car.

Just as a general comment. Guess you got this date from the door tag which was just a guess when the car would be built when the order was received. This original engine date you found is allot more solid than the door tag ;)

As far as the impeller question. You'll likely pay a premium for the Hipo impeller as part of the example you posted. Owner might have added the impeller to increase its possible resale value because of that

So then this would be the correct one, right?  Does it matter if it has a hipo impeller?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-Ford-Mustang-289-REBUILT-Water-Pump-C5OE-8505-B-Change-Impeller-for-HIPO-K/233229086988?hash=item364d89710c:g:2BsAAOSw5hpc3NwF
That is the correct pump and no it does not have a hipo impeller . The hipo impeller has 3 identifying holes in the back side with 6 vanes and the non hipo 4 holes and 8 vanes. The seller is saying you can change the impeller to make it a hipo unit. The non hipo version is better for street driving although you most likely will not notice the difference ether way IMO. The hipo impeller does not move as much water at high RPM . It is less likely to cause cavitation of the water inside the pump at the higher RPM range. You will pay a premium for a pump with a hipo impeller. They are identical otherwise including engineering numbers.
