Restoration of gas tanks is typically unpractical given the availability of excellent reproductions . A acid wash first and then going over with fine steel wool can some times brighten the Terne steel of the gas tank if it isn't too far corroded. A faux finish described in the library as a Galvanize look would also give a better look then a neglected tank . All these things I describe would not look nears as nice as one of the superior reproduction gas tanks . Just my point of view and suggestions. Others may have different.
