NOS 1965 Mustang Dash Pad identification
« on: September 15, 2009, 02:52:32 AM »
Is there a part number somewhere on the dash?  I purchased an "original" dash about 10 years ago for $325. and can't find a number inside the pad.  The box has no Ford logo, but the large white label on end of the box says "One C5ZZ-6504290-AFA Pad & Retainer Ass'y" and a small bar code next to it
says "PAD, DASH 65 BLACK (ORIG.)"  Thanks for your help!

Does the white label have a Ford logo?  The bar code sounds like a repro label.

Original 65-66 dash pads usually have a number molded into the foam, which can be seen by looking at the inside of the dash.  Usually like a large '2' or '24'.  I can't remember exactly, maybe someone else has a picture handy.

All of the factory dash pads will have 'U' shape cutouts for the dash molding screws across the front.  Some service replacements have this, but some don't.  You might have an "original tooling" dash pad, which should be ok in most cases.

Wow!  I see some differences with mine and the NOS one pictured on ehay.
I'll look for my invoice and let you know where I bought it.
Thank you for your help!

I'd like to revive this old thread in order to attempt to identify whether my dash pad is original or an NOS replacement.  This dash pad was on my 65 at the time I purchased it in 1979. I removed it in 1980 and stored it indoors, which is why it remains in almost perfect condition.  My original interior was the standard medium blue, but the prior owner had painted the dash and dash pad with a light blue paint.  In removing some of the paint, it appears the dash pad was originally black, rather than blue, as I would have expected.  This leads me to believe it may have been a service replacement.  The only marking  I can find is a "2U" on the underside.  It has to be Ford, because I don't believe there were any repros available in 1979, but I'd like to know if it was original to the car.
