1966 console woodgrain resto kit question...
« on: June 11, 2019, 12:40:44 PM »
Looking at buying the woodgrain console resto kit from Scott Drake, C5ZZ-6504567-AT, and apparently it doesn't come with the little sliver of woodgrain right next to the shift quadrant, as in attached pic. How do you fix this area? Talked to CJ Customer Support, and they have no answer.

Here is my experience (or more confusion?). Talking original automatic bezels only here. Some originals had the thin strip of wood grain. Some did not but had a brown paint applied in that thin area. This was on original non restored 66 consoles only although I did have 2 or 3 later 65's that had the paint as well. Could have been 66 consoles installed though. I also remember long ago seeing a one piece original wood grain insert with the thin strip connecting the two larger pieces. Doubt if this helps but just my experience.   Paul

The original factory console wood grain trim was laid on top of an aluminum "underlayment". Beware of a decal only kit.

i have several NOS wood grain automatic and manual console shift plates in stock and none of the automatic versions have that sliver/section attached they are all painted a very similar colour to the material. I call the colour that best represents it "mission brown"

I have confirmed with mike murray former ANHJ and he agrees with what i have and he has seen this on unrestored automatic console equipped 65 66 mustangs.

with regards to Manual console shift plates my examples do not have that sliver/section painted they are just left as a chrome section.

i can post some photos up a little latter in the day.

+1, the factory originals never had the sliver of wood-grain in that section, always painted brown color.

About 20 years ago an outfit called 'PRO', as I recall, was making aftermarket mustang stuff.  I bought a metal backed console inlay kit from them.  It had the thin woodgrain sliver on the side of the shifter and another 1" x 1" square piece for the lower left section.  Pro has been out of business for quite some time and I have never seen another similar kit offered.  Brian

Contact Tony's classics for a correct aluminum backed woodgrain console kit. I got one from him many years ago and its holding up very well....

Believe Pro Products was acquired by Scott Drake.

Nevertheless, the side strip is not concours-correct.

Was at my friends shop today picking up some watershields and taking a look at some top loaders I am interested in and saw he has what appears to be an original full length console. That sliver looks painted brown

No unfortunately I didn't ask but I can but not sure he will know.  He gathers a lot of parts and cars. If and when you come back to Phoenix, let me know a day in advance and I can send you to his shop during the week to see what I mean. Marcus has been there and I believe got a lot of original front suspension components.  I gave the owner of the car I judged in Houston his information to get a original heater plenum.
