Front Shock Mount
« on: May 24, 2019, 05:20:57 PM »
I recently got a set of NOS Autolite/Motorcraft shocks that were that orange/brown color. I masked off the bushings and painted them black. Where it mounts to the shock tower, is the finish correct or should it be more of a phosphate color? I didn’t do anything to them but remove the paint.

They weren't phosphate, but not bright steel like that.  Maybe a light dip of phosphate would achieve the desired result.

Originally the bushings were in place and painted with the shock Lower gaskets and hardware were not

This part Jeff. Didn’t realize the rubber would also be painted as well.

Its late but I think we may have some differences based on supplier (back to the MADE USA and MADE IN CANADA ) and in turn what was typically installed at San Jose verses what was installed at the other two plants. Too deep of a subject to do at this late time. Will need to give the subject a deeper look in time

Took some time to look at pictures and thinking over all the cars I've seen through the years.

Considering everything it appears to me that Dearborn and likely (no real smoking guns for NJ in 65) NJ the upper bushings and cross bar mount were not painted and instead natural.

San Jose could have the same (at least a couple fo examples) finsih on these upper parts or have the complete (minus the lower mounting hardware) all painted semi-gloss black including the upper bushing and cross bar.

This may be a result, like other years, where San Jose was supplied by the US plant while the other two plants were typically supplied by the Canada plant of the shock maker.

Hope this helps but it seems that as we get questions and do the digging we uncover possibly new facts and possibilities.
