I have a San Jose J-code January build C4 that is original. I am starting to clean up the drive shaft and am looking for some help on the colors codes on the drive shaft.
From what I have read and seen the yoke casting is red oxide or orange. Is there a specific color for this?
Yes some yokes were painted orange (to identify them for the driveline assembler) but not all of them. Question - did your car come with the 9" or 8" rearend?
The stripes on the drive line appear to be (from back to front)
1. 2 white strips approx 6 to 9 inches from the back end of the tube.
2. 3 colored stripes about 24 inches in look like green white yellow
3. one thin stripe toward the front looks to be white
4. looks to be a crayon x between the colored strips and the first 2 white stripes

The X has been seen on some but not all drivelines in 68 at San Jose
Question - When was this car built? Reason for the question is that the marks you found do not match any J code buildsheet written paint marks for a driveline. Any chance the driveline has been replaced?
My plan is to clean up the drive shaft and restore it to like new. So my question is what type of paint and colors do I use for the stripes?
Should I put a clear coat on the shaft to protect it from rust? or a cast paint? or leave it?
For paint I typically use just about anything (hobby, Rustoleum, spray can paint) that matches the color and tint. I do a fair amount of marks on cars so I have a collection of 40 or so different samples I mix to get just the right color
As for protection I would use a good oil such as Bioshield, Crossion X or similar thin film protective oil product
