428 C scratch or A
« on: April 11, 2019, 12:16:06 PM »
Have been told the C is not specific to CJ block I have one built 8B17 with C,  my 68 Shelby release date was 8B26 even though my car came with PI motor , is this considered period correct for my car?  Or do I need a A scratch in your eyes ?  I found a 7L28 block. What would you say is period correct?

Unfortunately, I dont have a lot of examples of GT500 block dates.

There are several things I would do to try to determine if you Police Interceptor block is correct ...

What number is your car?

I can see if I have an example close to yours.

Have you found a serial number on the block, heads or intake?

Since you can't see the "A" or the "C" with the engine in the car, I would focus on getting the right date code for your build date.  Your 8B17 is too close IMO but that 7L seems pretty early.

I have an example that is very close to # 1923, from that I would extrapolate that the car most likely had a block cast during the third week of January 1968.

I don't think it would be uncommon to find the PI block with a "C" scratch (after phoning a friend)

So the 8B17 C scratch that I have falls to close to date released. 8A15-21 area is the one I would need. Interesting, Thanks for the reply.

That would be really unusual. I suggest that you examine the date code closely. I suspect that it may be a 6A date code that looks like 8A. It's easy to confuse the way Ford cast the 8 and 6. They can look the same.

The C scratch replaced the A scratch mark. It has nothing to do with the 428CJ. The same block was used on any / all 428's during any given period of time, regardless of whether it was a GT500, 428CJ, cop car, or granny's Park Lane station wagon.

I also found a 8A with A scratch block .030 bore.
