67 289 THERMACTOR Engine Painting Details
« on: April 04, 2019, 04:27:13 AM »
Cut and pasted from a thread for the 68 289 engine painting we have Jeff's  reply quoted here. Were there many other differences  for 1967 THERMACTOR 289's?

My understanding is the Thermactor cast iron bracket is supposed to be mounted before paint. I assume it gets fully painted, is that much true? Also, the Thermactor Check Valves and tubes in place for paint and with Closed Emissions option, the breather cap filler pipe is in place before paint.

Any other differences? Do the wiring harness ribber-dipped J clips also get painted and if so, the RH valve cover center upper bolt ( per the Assembly Manual) has a J-clip for a vacuum hose on AC-Equipped cars and since the PVS is stated to be installed before paint, does this J clip also get paint?

Thanks

Some of these details can be viewed in other threads including the 1968 San Jose pictures of the engine drop of a small block as well in some of the unrestored picture threads for your year. Another thread that might be helpful is "17,000,000 Engine at Cleveland Engine Plant"  I suggest that you look them over for additional details

For a 68 small block V8 non Thermactor engine.
Only focusing on the items you can see from the exterior of an assembled engine you basically have the

- Engine block with drain plugs and freeze plugs installed
- Cylinder heads with attaching hardware
- Exhaust manifolds with attaching hardware
- Valve covers with only two retaining bolts in place. Upper corners only.
- Two rubber covered clips attached at the two drivers side valve cover bolts mentioned above.
- Passenger side spark plug wire relocator bracket  and attaching hardware
- Oil pan with attaching hardware and drain plug
- Intake manifold with carb spacer (carb may have been in place and shielded) with attaching hardware. Pain on spacer often fades away towards the upper surface
- Thermostat housing with attaching hardware
- PVS - masked off with removable mask
- Intake heater hose connection fitting
- Bypass coolant hose and with attaching hardware/clamps
- Timing cover with attaching hardware
- Water pump with attaching hardware
- Timing pointer with attaching hardware
- Rear engine plate
- Fly wheel with attaching hardware. Rear face of the engine and this plate, would not normally be painted
- Dip stick tube and dip stick
- Water temp sender may have been installed with a slip over mask/shield

Some of the surfaces were protected from becoming painted

- Slip over masked installed over the thermostat housing and water pump water necks.
- Unused water pump and intake heater hose connection points.
- Fuel pump attachment surface was also protected from paint.
- The mounting surface (for the pulley) of the water pump
- The oil filter (though painted engine color) has been debated over the year and I believe we're not certain if it was in place during painting (receiving some paint over the other coat of paint close to the mounting surface) or not.

From there the engine assembly was painted leaving the area/surface where the starter would mount up to unpainted either by masking off the area

Think I got it all. If not sure one of the helpful members will lend a hand ;)

Hope this helps

Do you have a copy of the 67 Engine Assembly Manual? (It includes more than Mustang Engines.) The pages for smog equipment should be a clue. All the components were installed after the engine was complete, including the engines' painting.
See above.

This question seems to have different answers for early, late and different years.

Richard . sorry but drawing a blank as to what part your referring to.

Some parts were installed prior to paint and others after just need to sit down for an hour or so and go through all the pictures and notes to see what can be determined and then put it in a post that makes sense ;)

Assume that you have the internal system on your engine - Correct?

If Richard has the internal system, can I butt in and ask that you cover the external one also?   8)

Yes, Internal ports inside the heads for the Thermactor.

I am hoping to shoot it on Saturday (2-days out) so anything out of the ordinary or anything to confirm whatever was stated already in the other (68 model-year) post would be great. Obviously, the largest differences would be in the Thermactor system when compared to a 68 289. I looked at some of the available unrestored 67 289 pictures till I was blue in the face (Corporate blue actually). Between those pictures and following the many threads over the years, I think I have a close idea what would be expected. Confirmation is easier than any re-do so that is the the hope I am clinging to.

I can also leave out the wiring J-Clips and valve cover bolts, do them later if need be.

Your December built 2V 289 has EXTERNAL Thermactor rakes? I find that odd if so.

For a 67 small block V8 Thermactor engine (internal design)
Only focusing on the items you can see from the exterior of an assembled engine you basically have the

- Engine block with drain plugs and freeze plugs installed
- Cylinder heads with attaching hardware
- Exhaust manifolds with attaching hardware
- Valve covers with only two retaining bolts in place. Upper corners only.
- Two rubber covered clips attached at the two drivers side valve cover bolts mentioned above.
- Oil pan with attaching hardware and drain plug.
- Engine drain plugs.
- Intake manifold with carb spacer (carb may have been in place and shielded) with attaching hardware. Paint on spacer can be a hard line right up to the top edge of the spacer or fading away towards the upper surface
- Thermostat housing with attaching hardware
- PVS - masked off with removable mask
- Intake heater hose connection fitting
- Bypass coolant hose and with attaching hardware/clamps
- Timing cover and water pump.
- Rear engine plate
- Fly wheel with attaching hardware. Rear face of the engine and this plate, would not normally be painted
- Dip stick tube, dip stick and attaching bolt.
- Water temp sender may have been installed with a slip over mask/shield
- Thermactor pump & alternator bracket and attaching (to engine) hardware
- Thermactor head to check valve tubes and check valves.
- Rear intake manifold Thermactor valve mounting bracket attachment bolts (2) likely in place (no bracket) when engine was painted.

Some of the surfaces were protected from becoming painted

- Slip over masked installed over the thermostat housing and water pump water necks.
- Heater pump and intake heater hose connection points. On cars with just the elbow at intake a mask was slipped over the whole unit.
- Slip over masked installed over valve cover breather neck on drivers side valve cover.
- Fuel pump attachment surface was also protected from paint.
- Thermactor check valve nipples.
- The mounting surface (for the pulley) of the water pump
- The oil filter (though painted engine color) has been debated over the year and I believe we're not certain if it was in place during painting (receiving some paint over the other coat of paint close to the mounting surface) or not.

From there the engine assembly was painted leaving the area/surface where the starter would mount up to unpainted or partially unpainted surface to assure good grounding for operation

Think I got it all. If not sure one of the helpful members will lend a hand. Hope this helps

Thanks Jeff. I missed masking the nipples for Thermactor check valves and I do not have both bolts for the rear intake Thermactor valve.
I wasnt sure if the wire J clips were painted but it sounds like it was with those top two bolts.

Because I have A/C and Thermactor, on the RIGHT VALVE COVER, center bolt...is there a painted J-clip there too? (or is it unpainted). It secures the Manifold vacuum source hose for the Ported Vacuum Switch, keeps the hose off the hot area of the center of intake manifold.

Is there a mask applied to the starter area of the block plate?
Since we faded out the black paint on the starter nose in order to have a good ground for the starter, the block plate had to be shielded somehow too, right?

Here is an original (?) block plate on which I've placed a spare starter nose and then after I remove the nose.

Seems to depend on the year and the worker. On some examples (different years) you can make out a sharp edge but its been my experience that is not the majority but more of a rarity.  One of these examples can be seen in the 68 San Jose plant pictures in that section of the site in a thread related to the engine installation.

Most of the time the painter just tapered off the paint on that side at least out on the outer edge (50% of starter opening) of not more.

Looks like your example was a little bit more though the outer third (around the outer bolt hole) was the lighter or bare section to ensure a decent ground
