1964 Illinois license plate numbering?
« on: March 20, 2019, 11:34:24 PM »
Does anyone know what the numbering system was for 1964 Illinois passenger car license plates?  The pace car I restored was sold new at Gilman Ford, thought it would be neat to put an original '64 license plate on it.

Also, was it a requirement to run front and rear plates on cars?

1961-78 FORMATS    No I,O,Q,Z used.*  No T,U used in 1st position.*
1961-66   1 - 999 999, AA 1000 - WY 9999      (Capacity 4,185,999)

1964 Order:  AA-RD        BM, DL, PM omitted          (3,600,999 P)
No R,S,U,V,W in 2nd position of LA-WY series.

It appears you have the choice of a pure 6 digit (3|space|3) or
AA-RD xxxx as noted.

See http://allaboutlicenseplates.com/athome.asp?State=Illinois for lots more.
They don't seem have a reason for the alpha plates that I could find in a quick search although they may be special in some regard (trailers?).

Best to stay with "123 456"

When I did this for the home state of my SJ car they had county prefixes. It appears Ill. does not.

License plates are just plain interesting...

Took a quick look and didn't have any first year Mustangs with original plates from Illinois to provide any data points. :(

Here's the first "documented" Mustang ever sold owned by Gail Brown.  Note the Original 1964 license plates... The car was from Illinois... Originally, The car wore "CL6609", but after they restored the car almost 50 years later, The car now wears "CL6611" ....probably from their other family car that they had at the same time in 1964...I am guessing...

See pics of car and plates...

Interesting that they changed the plate since they've owned it the whole time in IL.

Could've been that it sat for a long period of time and had to get new plates.

Then when they restored it, found original period plates.

The plates were purple or lilac with white lettering. I've attached a picture of one in a Cadillac I inspected last week.

Oh - and, yes, you had to have both front and back as it is still now.
