Since were on the subject of differences of the Rally Pacs, I've seen a lot of different things when searching about the mounting screws. For the steering column lower mounting bracket, I see almost constantly that for the high profile the screws were anti theft screws, but for the later low profile I've seen mention of just regular zinc phillips, but also anti theft as well... so which is it, was there a switchover at some point?

Also, for the screw used for the column wire cover that screws to the dash, what is that screw, I've seen both zinc and dark black sort of phosphate looking color...

The details you know ;)

Jason : After a little "digging" (I.S. Sheet 1295, 1965 MPC, 1966 MPC, 1960-66 MPC, and AMK's "Guide to Fasteners"), I believe I have some answers for you ; at least based on these resources.
First, and interestingly, none are shown as the "theft-proof" type, although whomever added those was probably smart to do so. Using the resources I noted, here is what is shown :

High Profile -  2, # 54448-S, #10-24 x 5/8", Hex Head, Gr 2, Split SEMS screws

Low Profile - Wire Cover - #52718-S8, #6 - 18 x 3/8", Phillips, Pan Head, Self-tapping screw

                   Bracket - #379773-S8, #10-24 x 5/8", Slotted, Fillister Head Shoulder Screw, with 1/2" threaded

What I think may be a mistake is the finish on the bracket screws for the High Profile Rally Pac, which are shown as "plain", as opposed to those on the Low Profile Rally Pac, which are noted as "S8", Zinc plated.

Pictures of the 3 screws are attached.

The information you entered reflects what is in the 64-66 Mustang Hardware Spreadsheets for the low profile Rally Pac. The high profile Rally Pac (65 use) lists 2 ea 377297-S8 10-24X5/8 SPCL TRI DRIVE,SP LKW, a special tri-lobe drive security screw as shown in the 65 Electrical Manual and AMK Guide P136. It was supposed to be supplied with the service Rally Pac as well, 75 MPC, Sec 036 P26, ILL-106 P03,04 for both.
I can't answer what the real screws were as none of the 65-66 cars I've seen had that type of screw but I think that realistically, once a Rally Pac was removed, the "funny drive" screws were replace with something more familiar.

Could you verify if that is a 65 high profile or a 66 low profile installation?
Also, the black Rally Pac seems to not match the white steering column as in a dealer sold unit.

Jim, this is a 65 K code convertible that Charles restored. So it would be the high profile style.

That observations seems to be in line with the 65 high profile Rally Pac having security screws, and the 66 low profile having non-locking regular screws.

Those are service kits, and may not reflect what the assembly line used. What I determined in the Ford Service Part Number System is that Ford did not include the finish in many hardware items as part of the part number. The only reason I can give is if you ordered that hardware item, you got one finish only, so no sense in listing it.
(Ford Motor Company was know as being "frugal" (read cheap) and saved money on printing ink. OK, prove me wrong.)

Jim : Yes, I realize that the ones in the MPC are service parts. However, as I do not have a 1965 Electrical Assembly Manual, and only had the 1965 Rally Pac Installation Sheet (which you can see is no help), I had to resort to the 1965 MPC.  Good to know what was noted in the 65 EAM ; glad you posted it.

I do agree with you on the "not printing" of the complete finish suffixes in the Assembly Manuals, as that is the case more times than not.

From the 65 and 66 Mustang Electrical Assembly Manuals:
- A 65 assembly line Rally Pac has "security" type hardware.
- A 66 assembly line Rally Pac does not have "security" type hardware.
From the MPC for a service Rally Pac:
- "Security" type hardware was supplied for either dealer or car owner installation. If the "special" hardware was used depended on the special tool being present. Otherwise, whatever fit.
Use what is shown in the 66 Electrical Manual.
