Casting dates/ VIN in automatic transmission - 69
« on: March 13, 2019, 07:31:45 PM »
A FE C6 trans case came up on eBay and somebody thought it would be a Talladega trans. These numbers are cast into the top side at the rear of the main case. 9A201118. Again these are cast, so my guess is 1969, Jan, 20 but what would 1118 be? There is no spaces between numbers

That's a partial VIN: "9" = 1969; "A" = Atlanta plant; 201118 = line sequence number. You cannot tell car line or body from that, but you can get warranty info, maybe even a Marti report.

I thought VINs were stamped into case. This raised casting numbers is is the same spot that the vin would be stamped. Seems unlikely they would cast vins in each individual case. Don't know thats why I am asking

If your really interested in what the trans came from, Kevin Marti could provide the full VIN and a Marti Report for some cash. I'd almost bet that it ends up being Fairlane Cobra ( or other non Talladega Fairlane or Torino ) as they probably made at least 18,000 non Talladega cars and only 748 Talladegas......

For years 428 Fairlanes and Torinos were viewed by a lot of people as great parts cars for Mustang restorations so not a lot survived the 1980's and 1990's. Even today, It's pretty tough to restore one of these cars and come close to breaking even financially...

If this is the case, I think the lighting and shadows give the illusion that the number is raised, I'll bet it's stamped just like every other C6 in the world ...

I agree, but I'm still pretty sure there stamped.....

Imagine the difficulty Ford would have changing the case mold for every car, then trying to reunite the right case with the right car after machining and building the transmission, then shipping them to the right assembly plant  :o

Looks like the typical shorten VIN stamped in to that style of automatic transmission - same typical location as used at many other plants and lines that year
