Does anybody know where I can purchase the cloth tape found in the trunk that holds down the fuel sending unit wire on the passenger wheelhouse? It's 2 7/8" wide. My "go to" Mustang suppliers don't seem to carry it. Also, I don't need 100 yards of it.

First, welcome to the forum.
The current rage is called "gaffer's tape". It's used by sound people to hold down cables at rock concerts. I think I got my 100 yards on e-bay (it's the price you pay).

The car is question is a 68, Dearborn Coupe with a build date of 3-17-68.

Anazon carries and sells gaffer's tape of different sizes that can be cut down to fit your needs for $9 a roll up. Challenge will be finding one with the correct finish.  Not to coarse, shinny  and so on

Do you have a sample of the original so you know what your looking for?

I have varying width, up to 4".  As Jeff mentioned, it can be cut or torn down to size.

I wonder if Ford used different backing/adhesive colors on their gaffer tape over the years?
I think Jim (jwc66k) noted the he used gaffer tape with a black backing.
My Boss has original tape in the trunk and it has a white backing. The white backing leaves a very slight white edge.

In a lot of cases I've noted the Osborn Assembly Manuals specifies a width.

I believe I said that the tape I found on several San Jose built 65 and 66 Mustangs had a dark, flat gray color on both sides. The gaffer's tape I got (several sources) has the same dark, flat gray color on top, and a flat white sticky side.
I also have several rolls that have a shiny black top that were sold as correct.

I think you mean "width".
I lay the length I need out on glass, use a straight edge and cut the tape to the appropriate width. The "sticky" does not seem to be affected by the glass.

Pretty sure that suppliers may have been different depending on which plant and they likely changed over time. Always best to compare like vehicles and years

In a lot of cases I've noted the Osborn Assembly Manuals specifies a width.

Just have to take the time to confirm that the assembly line used what an engineer in Dearborn wrote on a page.  As we've seen on some details certain lines and workers figured out what worked best for them and their situation and if it passed the inspectors they kept doing it.

Thanks for the Amazon idea. I'm going with "3 inch x 60 Yard 55 Meter Black Gaffers Tape No Residue Cloth Matte Finish Rubber Adhesive" from Amazon. Yes, I have an original piece right in front of me so I know what I'm looking for. Trimming it from 3" to 2 7/8" wide should be easy. As you say, finding the right finish is the tricky part. I've got a 51 year old piece of tape (that has seen better days), I'm trying to match with pictures on a monitor. I'll report back when the new roll arrives.

Jack at Deadnutson sells a kit for doing a car. It will give you multiple widths for various areas of the car. I believe his kits are more "correct" for 69/70's but look over at his site and see what comes up.

It's good to have a couple rolls, I use it on other areas, like when installing vent window frames in the doors... put a couple layers down to protect the paint, then remove.

I like this stuff for other uses, too.
It sticks real well, but pulls off nicely.

Sticky and strong like duct tape, but actually comes off without leaving glue behind.
I give it two thumbs up.
