Found and bought way too much evaporust... ive been putting everything through. just did the tail shaft.

I have found 3 main wide rings in the centre, 2 narrow white rings at approx quarter distance each end, a orange ring at the end that has the rubber insert showing, and the knuckle on that end painted orange on the casting.

An aditional orange/red mark runs along the welded seam lengthways and curls around the weight on one end. I assume this is an inspection mark for the weld.

Also the yoke showed yellow paint over the knuckle. I assume the original uni joint woult have the same yellow paint on it.

FYI - the tailshaft is part of the transmission. Your photos show the drive shaft.

Great information and photos, might be easier to search later if you changed the title of your post to 1968 J code driveshaft markings or something similar.

If you flip it over, it becomes a "tail shaft". It all depends what side of the Equator a person resides, I suppose :)

Never recall seeing a transmission yoke like that on a Mustang. Truck and van - maybe a big car but not a Mustang

It might also be beneficial to indicate 8 inch rear, since J-Codes could come with either depending on options.

Great pics, great info!

Thanks for pointing that out. i have a C4 with a partial vin that is from the Kansas plant. it could have something to do with that. i'll see if i can track down the stamp, but i think its 69, and i thought it may have been from a maverick? would this be similar to a 69 maverick yoke?

Here is the C4 it came with. I know that the C4 is not tge original one due to the 9K148841 partial vin stamp. So the yoke is different to the 68? I would assume the 9 means 69 rather than 79. I didnt think there would ve many differences. What should the yoke look like?

Mustangs used the infamous two-piece, steel-around-rubber-around-steel tube driveshaft?

I think the drive shaft is correct but the yoke has been questioned.

Tim it is the end of your driveshaft shown in your first picture that looks odd to me. Here are some pictures of a  restored 68 C code automatic driveshaft.

Thanks Marty. Looking at your pics and what ive noticed on mine, the only thing different is the yoke. The rest looks the same. It could be my crappy phone making it look off. There is a heap of grease still built up on the ends. I didnt want to scrub any markings off as i went. I can see part numbers on the end of my shaft. Ill clean them up this week and post them.

Ah. I think you see the yoke and mistake it for the shaft. The yoke has the yellow paint on it. And it loaded first in the after photos. It also has a 69 on it...
