1968 Coupe Bumper Guards
« on: February 13, 2019, 06:46:17 PM »
Question:  I notice some bumper guards with rubber on the outside and some without.  Which is correct.  Did only GT models get the rubber?  I notice some on the back are painted and some are not.
Any insight helpful.
Thanks
Tim

We need more information on your car because in makes a difference.
The front chrome bumperetts with the rubber strip were used in the first part of 67 production. The all chrome front bumperetts were used in latter 67 and 68. All 67 and 68s that got bumperetts used painted rears with the rubber strip.

I'm working on two mustangs.  Neither have the bumpers so I'm in the dark as to what to collect.  Car A. Was Bucked 5/20/68.  C code,  Built 5/23/68.  Not sure what will help. Hard top. Built at Matuchen;
Car B:  Bucked 1/19/68, Built 1/23/68.  C code.  Black Vinyl Roof Built in Dearborn.  Both coupes

Not all 68s built after the strike in late 67 got bumper guards. After the strike it was a option combined with wheel opening molding. I would suggest you order Marti reports on your cars that way you will know how they were built and optioned.

I have MARTI report for both.  Neither advise on moldings for wheel openings nor have I ever seen it on others that I recall.  Just Deluxe Wheel Covers on one and Wheel Covers on the other.  very vague.  So is it safe to say the front has Chrome with the rubber and back is shorter and painted with rubber strips?  I find it nearly impossible to simply look at photos for it appear many people just toss them probably because they don't like the looks.  I been trying to look at old commercials but the detail is difficult if they have rubber strips on them.  My one car with the Deluxe hub caps came with two chrome ones with R in one and L in the other.  No rubber strip but who's to say someone just tossed them in a box or really belong to the car.

My 68 GT/CS has bumper guards but no chrome wheel moldings.  The fronts are chrome with no rubber strip and the rears are painted with a rubber strip.

It looks as though both of your cars were built after the strike. Since you say that there is nothing called out on the Marti Reports, it would be safe to say that neither one of your cars originally received the bumperets front or rear (bumper guards).

I think your California Special has a different set of rules.

Let's start with some things that might be helpful:

I would not rely on the Marti report, they often have omissions.

If your car was equipped with rear bumpettes in 1968 it would have the rubber strips. It would also have some conical rubber cones on the back side. The bumper guards are painted body color.

You stated you have a Metuchen (MEH-2-chen) car. Then you should have the "RB" code on your build tag, located by the passenger side hood hinge. It will also be on your build sheet. That will be found taped to the main wiring harness, behind the dash.

+1 that is what I was trying to say in my last post. Here is a Ford sales addendum to the option sheet post strike that would apply to both of your cars.

The bumper guards were not part of the GT/CS package. I would think the a PO added them unless you have some documentation.

Here is a picture of our unrestored 68 HCS it has neither bumper guards or wheel opening moldings.

I know that many GT/CS cars did not have them, but I also understood from the CaliforniaSpecial.com site that many of them did, and that no one really knows.   :-\

Marty : Nice find on that Addendum. I've never seen that piece. Was it a separate single page "flyer", or part of a bigger grouping ?

I knew that the Wheel Lip Moldings were offered along with the Front and Rear Bumper Guards as a "package" as it is shown as such in the Revised Sales Brochure, interestingly dated 12/67, which corresponds with the Addendum dated 12/12/67, but neither gives a name for that "package". Hopefully, it will show up on someone's Marti Report.

Thanks for sharing the Addendum.
