Hey all,

I was searching through the forum looking for info or a picture of a exhaust manifold gasket, searching this subject I ran across an old thread and Bob mentioned that no gasket was used on the standard 289 and 289 HiPo's, so I just want to confirm this, if there was a gasket, I sure can't find any info on a part number or visual of what these looked like. Any clarification would be helpful...

Thanks,

Jason

Yes - easy to remember. No gasket at those surfaces for any of the classic V8's

If there ends up being a leak, can try getting the mating surfaces machined.

Yeah, going to have the exhaust manifolds machined prior to restoration and probably use Bob's method of a small amount of RTV High Temp Silicone just to ensure I get a seal... unless someone tells me that's a bad idea ;)

Thanks,

Often you can still see the sealant - especially the red stuff :(

Last engine I used graphite between the surfaces like is called out in the original engineering drawings and instructions on many of the period Ford engines. Worked out well so far.

Ah, interesting, I like that graphite idea, may give that a try instead, why not, if it was good enough for them ;) And I would never use RED RTV :)

Thanks Jeff...

The factory shop manual calls for lithium grease on the manifolds to cylinder head surfaces. It is sold in auto parts stores under the trade name Lubriplate.

Don't use RTV , you'd just be asking for a leak. On the metal to metal contact surfaces if there are any leaks they will seal up with carbon.

I don't want to see the high temp sealer (orange stuff) so I use a pick in case any squeezes out . I do not want to see it. I typically only put a very thing coat . I don't want to take the chance to hear a exhaust leaks which carbon my or may not seal up . It is just a little insurance policy which to others may not think is needed. In my case I don't want to take the chance of a problem and since it is typically invisible with the right effort the detail makes sense to me . Others may think differently .
