The only portion that is typically the gold chromate is the dicast vacuum tree portion and not the lower fitting portion. The NOS one from the ebay auction shows this difference...

We are of the same belief. The one from eBay looks to have been stored in a manner that preserved the original finishes very well. I intend to restore mine to look as it does (before painting the lower areas when engine gets shot engine color).

...I still hold out the possibility of the base section originally having the dichromate dye coating over the zinc but will wait and watch for new examples to show up if they do in the future :)

IMHO, I doubt you would find any original (assemblyline) examples that are overall "all gold" in appearance though I have found Service Replacement examples that have been.

Would you like images of the one I removed from my engine last week? It is zinc plated, no signs of dichromate in any of the areas protected by paint. It had been repainted but the zinc areas that were protected are silver in color, not gold.

No I believe that is what you found :)

Well see.  Just part of the process.

I agree these parts degraded faster then the carburater parts that shared the same finish. The good news is that the finish can be restored if need be. It is the same process that is used to restore Holley carb parts. Eastwood even makes a spray finish which although not as authentic still looks better the gray diecast  .Carb renew is the name i believe.

Since the Topic of this thread doesn't specifically state "Finish" (although that is primarily what has been discussed), I thought that since this thread was current, that I would Post the attached that I ran across today in the March 1967 Shop Tips.

The only portion that is typically the gold chromate is the dicast vacuum tree portion and not the lower fitting portion. The NOS one from the ebay auction shows this difference. FYI the 68.69.70 and later vacuum trees are also the gold chromate which would indicate a pattern. This same gold chromate process has been used to protect diecast carb parts (same material as vacuum tree)since the early 60's .
Along the understanding that the lower portion is a silver (zinc) not gold, what would be a reasonable way to accomplish that with this fitting that I have given a dry run here in this image (no sealer used yet). Since it will be (for the most part) painted engine color, is it even THAT important of a detail?

If your referring to refinishing or trying to reproduce the original finish of the top die cast section...

Re-Read what I asked.
Per my image, the TOP looks fine (to me anyways) but the LOWER is also gold so was asking of any way to strip off the GOLD without removing the underlying zinc or if I should just leave it alone since we are not absolute originals didn't have the (gold) dichromate on them. Maybe just treating the heater hose nipple since it will be masked...answers along those lines of questioning.

Removed my post since I apparently missed the mark

I've been successful at removing the gold dye by soaking the surface in vinegar. The length of the soak and success of the technique for me depended on how long the finish had been on the part.   If they used the same mask as they appear to have done on other versions of the PVS the upper lip of the section down maybe 1/8-1/4" may be in the shadow of the mask and or have limited amount of paint overspray at that point

Sorry for missing the specific question the first time.

Thank you Jeff. That makes sense now.
Regarding the heater hose bib, would the typical mask be about an inch, more or less?

Think that would be a good guess for the heater hose nipple. There is a not so perfect picture in the 65 Cleveland 289 picture thread at the top of the Assembly Plant discussion area of the site under Sub-Assembly plants. Of course this is just the typical 90 degree elbow style heater hose connection used on those engines

Using Bob's experience as a basis of my understanding...
I took the valve that was essentially "all gold" and removed the dye off of the LOWER portion, leaving the "tree" portion alone, only giving it a buff with brake cleaner.

To the best of the combined knowledge to date, this seems to be the correct finishe(s) on this item.

Jeff - that is the C7AZ version used on the 390, whereas my original post was of the C7OZ version used on the 289.  The original post includes a picture of the MPC that identifies both of these.
