66 Upper Control Arm Nuts
« on: January 04, 2019, 06:45:49 PM »
The Hardware spreadsheet seems to have 3 different fasteners listed. Trying to determine if my car still retains the original hardware. Stripped paint off of my existing nuts and wanted to re- phosphate them. The ones I have appear to be zinc plated. Are there different variations? These are the bolts that attach to the shock tower in the engine compartment.

I see only two, 378290-S8 1/2-20 hex, GR8,  from the 64-66 Mustang Chassis Manual, and 380952-S 1/2-13 hex, GR8, used as a service replacement with the service replacement arm and/or shaft assembly. Note the difference in threads.

I've only seen zinc or cad on upper control arm locking nuts on 65-66.

Amk sells a bolt that appears to be a very dark zinc/phosphate looking bolt. This is what caused my confusion. Just trying to get the finish right.

A zinc plated nut on a phosphated bolt is normal, if that is your concern.

Believe the bolts were likely heat treated but the important thing is the final look for our purposes so P & O or other process's will do the trick

I was starting to wonder if it was heat treated. The solves my concern. Thanks.

Phosphating that specific heat treated bolt, or any other heat treated item, will not affect its hardness. The phosphating process uses water under 212F, aka boiling. It takes a lot higher temperature to affect heat treated items.
