67 courtesy light group option
« on: December 09, 2018, 11:13:32 PM »
Looking to see if the experts have a clear answer for this:
Based on what I could find so far a
* 67 fastback GT with
* standard interior and
* AM 8-track stereo with speakers
would have had grills on the doors (because of the stereo speakers).

Would the doors also have the courtesy door light?

If the car had the courtesy light group option would it then have the door courtesy light?

Thanks.

I can say for sure that if it had a standard interior with a AM 8 track it would have the lower door grills with out the lights. I am not sure about the courtesy light option but would guess no. I will do some more checking on that.

Jay, are both of your original doors gone?

Both original doors intact. I am adding the 8-track AM stereo option and courtesy light group option and want to do it exactly as it would have been from the factory.

P. S.  Sorry for the typo in the title (autocorrect...) and posting in the picture thread. Maybe a moderator can move the thread to the correct place? I would not be offended at all.

Understood, thanks for letting us know.  I'm with Marty - the grille would be used, but there would be no door courtesy light.

Both original doors intact. I am adding the 8-track AM stereo option and courtesy light group option and want to do it exactly as it would have been from the factory. ...

IMHO, adding these options "as it would have been from the factory" would not really be a very appealing upgrade since the speaker grilles automatically look out of place when the factory installed an 8-Track player into a Standard Interior build. That is just my view on the topic. I have seen a factory-installed 8-track player on a Coupe at a local show and took a double-take on how it was done. In my opinion, it looked very strange. Even more strange, that it had no lamps behind the grille for the door lights just blacked out ~not sure if it was tape or paint).
Now, adding the other option (Courtesy Light Group), a fastback should have an under hood lamp, a trunk lamp, a glove box lamp and a glove box lock (keyed to match). A fastback (and convertible for other readers) would also ALREADY have the under-dash lamps from the factory. A COUPE would also need the under dash lamps added if it were to be "As Factory".

I am not sure what your goals for the car are but adding the AM 8 track with the door speakers in a standard interior will add questions from a lot of less informed judges. I have never found the sound out of the door speakers to be very good. Another option is to convert a AM radio to AM- FM and add a jack for a phone or MP3 player/ Bluetooth with a stereo dash speaker. It IMHO will appear much more correct and offer better sound.

Over 30 years ago, when I had decided that I was either going to add an AM - 8 Track or a Hang-On 8 - Track to my '67 (and before I had a copy of the Ford Instruction Sheet), I too wondered how the Door Speakers were to be installed. No speaker grills for '67 were shown in the Ford Parts books.

I contacted Bob Perkins, who, even back then, had the reputation of an "authority" on Mustangs. Bob told me that cars that were ordered with the AM - 8 Track Option and Standard Interior, came with the Deluxe lower door grills from the Factory, and without the door courtesy lights. He also noted that the majority of cars he had seen with either Dealer Installed AM - 8 Tracks or Hang-On 8 Tracks, also had the Deluxe lower door grills, some even with the door courtesy lights. This does not seem unusual since, as noted on the Instruction Sheet, if the car didn't have the lower moldings (ie was a Standard Interior), the Dealer was to get them from its "stock". Of course, if the Dealer didn't have them in stock, or if for some reason the Owner didn't want (or couldn't afford) the Deluxe lower moldings, it would be easy to substitute 1966 Door Speaker Grills. Likewise, it the Dealer were installing the AM - 8 Track or Hang-On 8 Track, it would be easy to also add, at the Owner's request or at the Dealer's suggestion, the Door Courtesy Lights.

Just for info, I opted to go with an original AM-FM and the Ford Hang-On 8 Track.

Hope this helps.

Would you be kind enough to provide measurements for the speaker template center to center on the horizontal and vertical speaker screw holes?

If doing speaker holes  "as factory installed", you may wish to do a search. The factory kinda "choppef" the holes in rather sloppilly.There were a few pictures in at least one other thread.

I thought I'd be okay with the factory AM radio, but it leaves me wanting.  I should have thought this out when the doors were off and bare metal. I will probably pull the corners in with a Greenly punch and cut the straight lines with a cut off wheel. I can't do the hack method. I was floored how nasty the tail light panels were cut on my Shelby. I can only imagine the implement used to cut them.

Be very careful then. You have VERY minimum clearance to the window regulator for installation of non-Ford original speakers. Retro-Sound sells a 4x8 that fits (R-48N).  If you choose to use the Retro-Sound speakers, you will need to elongate (oval) the speaker openings in the door to clear the speaker cone though.  Look into Crutchfield site to find some (circa) 1979 Dodge pigtails  (Metra 71-021C Speaker Wiring Harnesses) that will plug in to the backs of those speakers and also plug perfectly into the factory Ford 'optional door harnesses for w/speakers'. This should conceal you installation well.

Richard:
I have the door harness with provisions for speakers as they were all I could get with the convenience group options. I gather I will need another radio harness as well.  I remembered someone was doing conversions on factory AM radios which converted them to AM/FM stereos.  Do you recall who it was?
