64 1/2 battery cable hold down clip
« on: December 07, 2018, 02:36:26 PM »
Assembly drawing indicates a clip shown on the battery to engine ground cable attached near to the shock tower.  On restored cars, most have the same clip that holds the starter cable to the engine block or a nylon strap (376914-S or 376576-S) like what's used to hold rest of the looms to the aprons in the engine compartment.  However, a closer look at the assembly drawings shows that the clip  is different (shorter than) the one near the starter, but does not have a part number shown.  Through some research in the period parts catalog, this clip appears to be part number 372368-S (YY1).   Can anyone confirm this on an unrestored car, or a period reference drawing that shows the part number?  Arrow in attached pic shows where this clip goes.  In fact there is an impression of it in the paint around the hole.

TIA

Scott,
The factory installed clip exists and is probably part of the cable assembly (supplied with) and not shown as a separate item on the 64 Mustang Electrical Assembly Manual drawings (AM0003 pages 23 and 24). The clip is show attached with one screw, 31497-S8. It is for V-8 applications only, apparently to clear the generator. Service replacement cables are universal and do not reference any clip or screw.
(The same "part of a cable assembly" clip (or clips) applies to the solenoid to starter cable for a V-8 engines. It's shown on the drawing for attaching but a part number is not referenced.)
Part number 372368-S is not shown used on Mustang assembly drawings, and I cannot find a sketch/drawing in any source documentations I have. It may be what it is, just not documented.

Not the best pic, but here is one.  It has a tab in the middle to lock the ends together, is dipped in a rubber coating.  All 64.5 V8 should have this clip.  Not used on 6 cyl.

Jim,
The clip on the 14431 cable to starter is likely 372865-S100 in the period parts catalog - described as "Clip(relay to starter cable to engine block)".  I also, figured out from an illustration in other period Ford documentation, that the 372368-S is one of those engine compartment adjustable nylon straps used on other harnesses within the engine compartment.  So the 372368-S is not the clip we are looking for here.

Charles,
Doesn't look like the illustrations in the Ford references, but wouldn't be the first time that was the case...   Do you know the approximate assembly date on the car?  Looks like it was restored, but the clip certainly looks original.   Oh, and no compliant from me on the pic, looks fine  :D

The assembly date doesn't really matter.  Seen the clamp on 05C cars.
