Topic: 67 Glovebox Clip Rivets

I suppose it has gotten down to this level of minutia.

Are the rivets that hold the owner's card (my guess) clip black or silver colored?
They are steel so if silver I can't tell if they are natural, zinc or Cad?
Or were they painted black to meld in?

What I've had to do a few times is "remove" a rivet to see what color is on the underside of the head and shaft. In Hi-Tech, it is referred to as destructive analysis.

I was hoping to not remove it. Get a Dremel and clean it up or some evaporust or both.
Then paint with black or silver.

I have an ugly spare, though.
Ok, I'll take that one apart.

Hi Bill sorry for the late replay but here are my glovebox door rivets. Unfortunately mine look just like yours and judging by how out both rusted I am going to dare to assume that they were not painted, or plated, but bare metal, which would explain the rust on both sides. Some of the only rust I have found on my car. Also it would appear that the clip is either painted or phosphated. Your clip looks to be in better shape than mine. I thought that mine was actually unpainted until I saw yours. I assumed that mine was just weathered due to age.

I usually soak the whole liner in evaporust.  Just have to be sure to rinse well an blow out with compressed air.  Follow with metal protectant.

It was plated I believe so no I would not

Thanks for the followup pictures, Bullitt68.

My clip appears to have a decent finish (of some sort) so I too will Evaporust the whole thing and then protect the rivet finish on both sides.
The staples should also look minty fresh.

Good idea Bill. I am going to drop my glove box in Evaporust tonight and leave it overnight and see how it turns out. I do love evaporust. Hopefully it will not affect the plastic in anyway. Normally it does not.

Hi Bill. Sorry for the slow reply. I soaked the glove box in Evaporust and this is how it turned out. Did you do yours yet? I don't think I need to do anything else. I am not sure how the clip looked it originally.

Pic two shows how it looks in ambient light.
Pic three is the back side.

I suppose the true test is how it would look with a glovebox light shining on it.

There is some light exterior paint fog on the top, back side of the liner which I elected to leave.
Interesting that it managed to find its way back there.

I think the rivet has a light cad (or similar) applied to it, so the rivet is shiny.

Looks good Bill. I May stelel wool the rivets a bit, but other than that I think this is a great example of when Evaporust is the ideal product. It works great on parts you cant either disassemble or treat with other methods. Of course one could remove the rivets, but for correctness this is a better option IMO. Thanks for pointing that out.
