« on: October 25, 2010, 03:32:11 PM »
65 hood pin. should be gold zinc chromate. anyone know of an inexpensive way to replicate without using paint? are there any dyes available that would suffice? don't want to have to send it off and don't want to buy a plating kit either.....ideas?? yeah, i know i'm being a tightwad today.

I'm sure it varies, but I just had mine replated for $10 about 18 mo. ago.  No other pieces for a volume discount, either!

You can dye it (the dichromate is just a dye used after the zinc plating) but the dye does not look great by itself - without the underlying base. And the dye will cost $25 (or so) or more

If you're referring to the safety catch, it should be phosphate/oil.

Thanks Charles, Yep, its the safety catch I just couldn't remember what it was called....so IT needs to be Phosphate & Oil and the pin itself needs to be Zinc DiChromate then......

well i tried something today.....what's your opinions ?? i lightly blasted the hood pin @ 60 psi using fine glass beads. wiped it down with 000 steel wool & lacquer thinner. then i used some rit yellow gold dye. about a teaspoon full in a pan 1/2 full with 160* water. i soaked it for about 5-7 minutes then rinsed it with cold water. the dye package cost $2.49......attached are the results..........
