« on: December 01, 2018, 02:57:07 PM »
I would like to detail my 1968 Mustang GT 9" J Code C4 Metuchen 1/68 Driveshaft and I don't have the build sheet.

I am looking for demensions and colors of the driveshaft marks and/or a copy of someones build sheet.

Thank you.

Note: I have a copy of a J code 4 speed build sheet, and it indicates L B L U D G N W H T. ( light blue, dark green, white)

The buildsheet information you posted. Was it from another GT or a non-GT? Since they use different rearends.

If so are you now just looking for confirmation or details of what each color looked like and or their placement?

I think we can answer the question. According to the 1975 MPC there is only one driveshaft for the 1968 302 GT

It is the C8ZZ-4602-A

The stripes on that driveshaft are light blue, dark blue, pink

Have you looked at the main wiring harness for your build sheet? 1968 NJ cars almost always have them there.

Im surmising the other car is not a GT

Since the 75 MPC would have only shown what was available at time of its printing was available for a replacement for the original driveline I thought I would double check a 68 MPC to see what, if any, light it could shine on the subject. I found that that MPC did not reflect what was used originally on the assembly line but instead lists replacements only and some, what I found, some details that don't make sense at this time

Can confirm that at least the buildsheet show, for GT J codes (non-GT's had at least two different drivelines) both automatic and manuals shared the same driveline. A somewhat unusual occurrence

My car in a '68 GT coupe, J-code, C4, San Jose build 12/67.  I don't have dimensions, but I do have some pretty good photos of the original, unrestored driveshaft if you're interested.

Thank you for the responses.

The build sheet info that I included was from a non-GT.

Terry, I would like to see the pictures of your driveshaft.

I am looking for colors and placement of them.

I was able to locate my build sheet, but unfortunately there was only a few pieces.

Considering what you posted above that us what I was expecting

Back to your original request

From 68 J code automatic GTs before and after your car was built I found Blue- Lavender - White.  Likely applied like the typical 68 drivelines since you have no original markings let to support a different choice at this point

Hope this helps

Terry sent me pictures of his 1968 GT, J-code/C4  Dec ‘67 build date San Jose plant driveshaft.

Looking at it from rear to front... it looks like 6-8 " there is a silver stripe, and then in the middle it looks like light blue - white - lavender.

Jeff, Are his colors in a different order because it was built at a different plant?

Think I have pictures of that driveline or at least another in the 8R116xxx range marked the same

To your question No the drivelines were not made at the car assembly plant so they did differ because different workers installed them. Though I don't know for certain right now if there were two or only one supplier (one would be odd) for all the plants. Its possible a batch (including that car's example) got marked incorrectly but because of the documentation have from the NJ plant and that the workers used that to identify them I would go with the order written on the buildsheet rather than what is possibly a small number of mis-marked drivelines installed at another plant on the other side of the country.

I had my driveshaft balanced and then took a scotch brite pad to the shaft and found some color stripes.

Measuring from back to front...

10 3/4" (3/16 wide) orange/brown? (I am not sure about the color)
12" (3/16" wide) orange/brown?

22" (1/2" wide) white
25" (1" wide) pink
28" (3/4 wide) red
