70 428 parts questions (Last of the Pics Added)
« on: November 30, 2018, 12:00:00 AM »
I Bought a group of parts where owner stated they came off an original 1970, 428 Mach 1.  I am collecting parts for my sons 1970, 351C Mach 1.  Are the AC condenser and dryer the same on both?  Is there parts numbers or markings for me to verify what I really have?  Same question with the Power steering oil cooler and with the throttle cable.  I believe there is other stuff in there to like the transmission plate, and who knows what else.  All appear to be original take offs but Rookie eyes are looking at them.  If I can restore and use them I will for my son's car, if they are different then a good scrubbing and off they go for sale or trade.  I am hoping they work for my sons car.  No pics yet as I have not had time to even get them out of the truck.  I would appreciate any tell tale signs of what to look for as I unload the stuff.

J Speegle or Mr Klier, you have always been the lamp of wisdom so I was hoping you could both jump all over this for me and enlighten a rookie.

Thanks,

Dan ,those parts are the same between 428 and 351C. In those case's it is year specific. FYI the dryer will typically be useless if it was opened for any period of time. It is filled with a dissident which will absorb water if opened to the atmosphere. The dryer may still have the paper sticker for identification . It would be best to post a picture to determine if you have the correct dryer and condenser.

Bob and Specialed,

Thank you for the information.  Especially nice to hear the condenser will work, I have an NOS in the box but would rather restore an OEM if I can avoid using the NOS one.  I am afraid to even open the box for fear of ruining it.  Acknowledge uselessness of the dryer.  I think I can still get NOS.  The ends are taped up on all the AC stuff but better not risk dryer.

Okay so 351 C with auto and air never had a PS oil cooler?  Nice to know.   Is that PS oil cooler the same as 70 Boss 302?  I can use it on mine if they are the same?  Did not think of asking in my original post. I will post pics this weekend of anything I am unsure of or need guidance on.

Once again, Thank you both for the quick and enlightened responses. This and the B2 forum members are a life saver.

Dryer can be restored usually cheaper than a service replacement. Check pricing and compare a service replacement before tossing it.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

I will look to see what I have this weekend.  I believe there are pulleys and brackets in there also, so I have some homework and learning to do.  I know I saw an evaporator canister in there.  I assume Mustangtek will help with most and I will post pics when I can get at the stuff I have no clue on.

Hi Dan, On your power steering pump, the pulley will also be different, The 428 (non air) pulley is real hard to find.... The bracket on the back that indexes the High pressure hose is also unique to a big block as is the hose itself. The cooler is different than a Boss 302 (a boss cooler has 2 short tubes at the base, a 428 cooler has longer tubes that are unequal in length). 70 Cj's have some unique parts that are hard to find so do your research on the stuff you got before you sell the extra stuff so you don't make a mistake ...

Post or PM me a list of the stuff your looking for for your sons Cleveland car, I have a bunch of stuff stashed away and have some extras..... Also post some pic's of what you got, I'm sure that several people here can identify it for you and let you know what's what...

Gentlemen,

Awesome information.  Thanks John for breaking it down "Big Barney Crayon Style"  That really helps a rookie.  I will post pics just as soon as I can get to the stuff.  Work, Christmas prep and Honey Do's are killing me.  I will try to clean up a few things and get pics posted soon.

John as for stuff for his car.  Jan 70 Dearbron Mach 1.  Grabber Blue, 351C 4V, AC, PDB, PS, FMX Auto, Shaker, Slats, Spoiler 3.00 to 1 open end 9", Black interior.   I need a good 351 Cleveland oil pan, looking for any NOS rubber bumpers, grommets, plugs, weatherstrips, body seals, insulators etc...  All the little things that bite you in the Arse when you put it back together.  Wiring straps, harness routing looms, trim mounting hardware, all the minutae clips and poly/plastic/rubber bushings, spacers whatchamajigs etc...  The list is endless and relentless and Hell Im not even sure what is restorable on his car because I havent even tore into it yet.

Thanks for all again and have a great weekend,
Dan in Kansas

John

The picture shows a cooler with 2 short tubes but I have not seen one like this before on a Boss or CJ.  I think the Boss cooler has unequal length tubes similar to a 428 CJ but with the lengths reversed side to side.

That PS cooler looks like the one that attaches to air conditioning compressors. I have seen them on Ford passenger cars 1971-74?

There is a part number on the flat mounting bracket on the whatever it is cooler, definitely C8AA-3D746-C  Also a 7AA on the back of one pulley and I'm not sure but one looks like a 390 bracket but MustangTek is not that clear and I cant find a part number on it.  I am also looking for a part number on the AC condenser but have not found one yet.  Another bracket has C7AA 3A732-B.  Parts still need to be cleaned so maybe under the grime.  I may be looking at a hodge podge pile of stuff from a 390 or several engine possibilities.  I see mention of an AC mounted PS oil cooler for Galaxie and LTD?

Can anyone tell me about the canister in the pics also can I get conformation from anyone that the condenser is the same for all motors or are there different ones for 69-70 depending on motor?  I will post pics of it tomorrow, I am looking for a part number on it but don't know if there is.

Thanks,
Dan

For whatever reason I am not seeing any pictures. You will not find a metal stamped engineering number on the AC condenser . The lower compressor bracket will have a C9 number but the upper compressor/ lateral bracket will not . Since I can't see the picture I can't tell which dryer (assume that is what you are talking about since I already told you the condenser is the same 69/70 regardless of engine. The dryer is 69/70 specific and has a long tube made into it. The 67/68 does not have the long tube.
