The reproduction cans as well as the NOS cans do not have the vinyl coating, it was done on the assembly line ones only as far as I know. the plastic dip would be the best product to use. The spray is too thin and would take 100 coats.

Jack at Dead Nuts on has the correct hoses.

Mine is mounted below the battery, bolted through the fender apron. Dearborn built R code May 1968.

Mine is mounted inside the wheel well below the battery tray you can se the outline. IS yours for an AC car? I didn't know they used different locations.

Does anyone have any photos of how the vacuum hoses were routed and where they go through the firewall. Since mine was not functioning and it was using an electric switch I dont' have any of the mechanism or hardware as a reference of where it goes and how it works or where it connects etc

There are 11 pages of "air plumbing" in the beginning of the 68 Mustang Chassis manual. Got a copy?

Yes I just received 4 of them butI haven't opened them up yet but I shall asap. Hopefully many of my questions will be answered there. Are these the only 4 I need or am I missing anything

The manufacturer added ribs to strengthen the can. Smooth canisters are no
longer available .

The smooth canisters were collapsing from engines pulling more than 14 inches of vacuum.

Yikes! Thanks for that info. I did notice from the link to West Coast Classic Cougars that they restore some parts so I will contact them to see of they can restore my unit. I have no idea what is inside the can, it just looks like an empty coffee can to me

I found more of the blue paint under the sound deadener on the Tilt-A-Way canister. I thought that the canister was covered in sound deadener, but it appears to be covered in plastic material or a vinyl wrap of some kind. It also appears to have some type of fibre particle board covering the end where the vacuum hoses connect.
The cans were dipped in a rubber material. I used the black rubber material that you dip tool handles in . You can also do multiple coats of the same product sold in spray can form . You have to do multiple coats because if using the spray material it is much thinner then in a can. The the round seal is a foam product to seal the can against the apron so no road debris gets threw to the engine side.

Great thanks Bob. What is inside the can? So I could media blast the can and then dip it. Possibly re use the end seal or use a suitable replacement. The grommet/plus that the hoses attache to seem to be in there pretty good. I tried to pry it out, but stopped as I didn't want to damage it until I did some more research on it first.

Nothing is "in the can". Its simply a reservoir for the vacuum (a place to hold it until its needed) needed to operate switches, plungers and other items that push and pull things.

Not sure that I would try and open one up. Perfectly sealing the fitting to the can again might be difficult.

Possibly - if it makes allot of sound when you shake or rotate it - you might inject some evapo rust into the insides to kill any rust and coat it a bit. For me if it doesn't need it focus on the exterior, making sure its solid and making it look original again

It is one piece so the nipple does not come out. It is a vacuum reservoir so basically a empty smaller coffee can . Some have a one way check valve made into the tip but otherwise empty. If blasting you should cover the nipple so no debris gets inside. Small holes can be soldered to close. You can suck on the nipple and quickly cap the end to see if it holds vacuum and no hole. The dipping in the rubber does a good job of sealing small leaks in seams.

again, I would recommend testing the check valve before putting any work into it.  would be rough to spend time blasting, dipping, installing, covering with a fender and splash shield...and going for the maiden voyage only to find out it is broken.
