Square heater duct - C5ZZ-18A620-A
« on: November 28, 2018, 12:55:29 AM »
When were the square heater ducts used?   Is it specific to plant or year or both?  Early or late?

I recently picked up a pair of NOS heater ducts with Ford label and part number C5ZZ-18A620-A.   The box says C5ZZ-18490-K

(Sorry, I previously posted this in the wrong place.  I think this is the correct place.)

Thank you, Brian

65/66 at all plants from what I have seen . I haven't seen another type unless 64.5 used something different. Hopefully the set you bought has the cardboard ends that are held in the top of the dash. That is the part that least survives . There is only the plastic reproduction alternative.

I didn't get them.  These are just the tubes.  I have one end from a parts car, need another one.

Why are there round tubes too or are round reproduction?

Round was used 67/68 and all of the reproduction hoses are round. Square is good and very desirable because it is easily recognized as square under the dash.

Ok, thank you Bob..  I appreciate it.  I recently bought these, so I am very glad I did because I plan to use them on my 66 convertible.  :-)

I was initially unsure because I have seen NOS round ducts with a B5 (1955) number too (loose, not on a car) and thought maybe they carried on into the 60's.  Good to know these square ducts are correct.

I fell very confident that the ducts you have are correct for all assembly plants and 66 mustangs production year.
also would you have any interest in selling the box once you use the defroster ducts on your 66 car???  got to ask!!!

Bob Gaines; do you have any evidence of the round version defroster tubes being used on any 65 san jose built mustangs??

Round hoses were used on 64.5 through early 65.  Have seen them on cars up through Feb '65... San Jose and Dearborn.

Brian,
You can get a clue from the Ford part number. The 65 and 66 Mustang Assembly Manuals both reference part number with a C5ZA- prefix, the "5" being the clue. A 64 Mustang would have a C4ZA- prefix which in most cases, is an indication of a change in design.

True, I forgot about the part number.  I guess if it was a C5AZ it would fit many Ford cars, but being a C5ZZ it is specifically Mustang and obviously can't be older than 65.  Where my mind went wrong was seeing all of the round hoses in the reproduction world......I know better than to assume the reproduction guys make the correct parts.  For function and daily driving I'm sure most owners don't care what hoses they have, but for the guys like us that enjoy concours square hoses is necessary.   Thank you for the help.   :)

Phill, the square hose is the only type that I have found on any of the unmolested 65 Shelby's that I specialize in over the years. Do you have evidence that a 65 Shelby like time frame car did not use the square tube ?

Some pics from a few SJ and Dearborn cars.  I know my '65 K fastback had round ones, but don't have any pics, that was a Jan '65 Dearborn car.  I have seen round hose used on SJ cars into February '65.  Seems around March '65 is when the change was made to square type.

All the 64.5's I've seen had round hose, including the pace car I restored.

All '66 should have used the square type.
