65 289 gold valve cover bolts
« on: November 14, 2018, 08:42:29 PM »
I see other threads on this, but it is not clear to me. Forgive me - its getting late and I don't want to spend hours looking. Would someone simply tell me the correct bolt for the standard 65 289 valve cover? Is it S2 or S8?

Thanks

Try the forum's library, Mustang Hardware Spreadsheets 64-66, by application.
Oh, and welcome.

I had done that - p/n 373071-S2 ENGINE,VALVE COVER-HEAD,289. But in the notes it states SHOULD BE -S8. That is obvious, but there is such a stark difference between a PO bolt and a zinc plate.

I also looked in the MCA judging list and didn't see anything (Para. 3G/H), so are judges not including that in their evaluation?

Too much to do, so I'd like to get it right the first time.

Thanks again for your comments.

Lock washers or bolts with captured lock washers were typically cad plated since zinc plating can make lock washers more brittle and prone to cracking.  This is obviously not as much of a concern with larger lock washers.

The typical valve cover bolt for 65-66 was cad plated.  AMK makes a nice repro if you want an easy button.

Isn’t it a split washer that is supposed to be with the bolt? AMK ran out of those and last I knew they hadn’t found a supplier to replicate that. The washers they have now are solid.

If you look to the right hand column, the source is the MPC which indicates a finish different than what has been found. I check that source again and it's "vague". The MPC says a screw and separate lock washer for 64-66 applications, and 373071-S2 for 1968. Yes, it should be -S8.

Baking after plating is one process to reduce hydrogen embrittlement. I specify that step on all my zinc plating.
