1968 GT Exhaust Tips

I did a search but could not find any info to confirm if these are original exhaust tips and if the hanger brackets welded to them are correct or if they were added after the fact. Also assuming that they should be fully chromed.

Originals would have engineering numbers stamped into them and polished stainless steel with rolled tips. The brackets are not originally welded. Assembly proceedures are outlined in the Jim Osborn Assembly manuals. If you do not have a full set, they will (all) be worth the purchase price by at least 10X the cost.

Thanks Richard I ordered a bunch of manuals from eBay that I am waiting for. Hopefully those are the manuals that you are referring to. So sounds like the exhaust tips are like most of the rest of the drive train, not original to the car. I was hoping to find photos on the site, but didn't have any luck finding a photo of what the originals look like

Best I have at a quick look. These are the C9 version though, slightly different than what you need for Concours but a very cose similarity. (you are looking for assemblyline C7 versions)
Be careful though, later service replacements DO NOT HAVE THE ROLLED TIPS and there was an early C7 version that doesn't have the dimples in them.

Thanks. Mine have the dimples on the top do yours as well. How far back are the part numbers. I guess the ones I have are not original. I am not sure if mine are polished or chrome, but I think that are polished

ONLY early 67's did not have the dimples. A rather rare find if you ever see any. Scott Fuller can make you up a couple for your 68. His systems are the absolute best out there but they are more in line of Concours Trailered and Thoroughbred, not so much the perfect choice for a daily driver (IMHO). The hardware he sells (clamps, hangers, tips etc.) are all 100 % perfect for all classic Mustangs.

Great photo comparison. Thanks. Quite a difference on tailpipe length. Very obvious difference between original and repop indeed

Thanks Richard I am ordering a complete exhaust as I want the transverse style muffler and resonators and correct hangers/brackets etc

The O.P.'s signature is showing an "S" code (390) not 428, so I have to wonder, was the later 390's also the 2-1/4" pipes like the R-codes? (If so, I was not aware of it).

First the two pipes in the photo are the same length. Its merely an optical illsion.

Im not as familiar with the the 390 pipes. I know they used the smaller diameter pipes.  Did they use the quad tip?  If it did , were the tips welded to the tail pipes?

I would think the GT pipes even the smaller diameters would have a similar looking tailpipe with a welded tip.

Scott would know.

After looking at Scotts site, it appears the smaller diameter pipes had a separate tip. Does anyone know for sure?

The S code used a separate tip unlike the 428.

Sorry my bad. I was referring to the trumpets/tops as the tailpipes. The original look stubby compared to the other units that look just like mine
