Related comment, or maybe a question.  I think if a car had this clip it would not also have the push in plastic loop clip that could be installed just below it.  Might be a clue as to whether a car originally did/did not have this clip?

I have some pictures were both were installed - clip/retainer and the plastic loop.

Looking at the clip on the radiator support that holds the headlight wiring harness.  Wanted to post this photo here and get a general idea of what people have seen on this clip on original cars in terms of finish and color.  I think AMK sells a clip the correct style clip but not sure if color is correct. 


I have seen the olive drab clips holding the fuel sending unit wire to the underside of the car at the front edge of the gas tank on June 64 Dearborn cars, but the color of the olive drab is different than the green on the AMK parts.  However, the trunk harness is clipped to the LH wheel house with a similar clip, but a darker finish (phos or black).  There is a mix of colors in various areas but all called out as S100 finish in the assembly manual.

To add some clarity, some phosphate finishes may vary in color and tone depending on the type of acid used and type of material to be phosphated. Finished colors should be dark, olive drab, black, or others, but it will be dark, especially after the oil step. That is another process step.
In the case of the clips, they are made from stamped spring steel, which has a smooth, shiny texture, but are not immediately oil dipped because the "plastic like" material applied over the end to prevent wire abrasion needs to be applied and that material needs to stick. They may be oil dipped after that to prevent corrosion on the exposed end.

I've also found variance in the phosphate shading, which I assume is from different grades of steel/alloys used.  I've done large batches of bolts/fasteners, using the same phosphate solution, same time in the bath, that come out from dark to medium gray.

Unfortunately (of the thread purposes) its a restored example and even has some incorrect details in the shot. But that's a subject for another thread ;)
