Headlight harness wiring clip
« on: November 04, 2018, 06:00:31 PM »

Looking at the clip on the radiator support that holds the headlight wiring harness.  Wanted to post this photo here and get a general idea of what people have seen on this clip on original cars in terms of finish and color.  I think AMK sells a clip the correct style clip but not sure if color is correct.

Some "Mustang Porn" with that battery in the shot. Too bad we cannot get THOSE from AMK!

I have seen clips that had what appears to be bare metal and dipped , dark P/O and dipped and olive drab and dipped. I have seen many on original cars that clearly don't have a finish other then steel , others that look like they may be P/O and dipped because not much left of a finish . I have not found a olive drab and dipped that I can confirm on a original car. Maybe others have seen olive drab in a original context but just reporting on my observations.

Marcus,
Unfortunately the finish is "Early American Rust" on many sample cars and appears to be 66 San Jose only. The clip is 372047-S100 as I have two San Jose Oct 65 builds with that clip. (My May 65 San Jose build does not have one.) It is undocumented. It seems to be used with a wiring strap, 376914-S, ref the 66 Mustang Electrical Assembly Manual,  AM0013 page 13 (item 2). In actuality the finish is dark dull phosphate or dark shiny, the key word is dark. I used the finish on several other wiring clips as a basis for this one on the assumption the assembly line worker would use existing inventory to be used on the radiator support.

I have never known a 65-67 assemblyline group 22 battery to have red caps from the factory.

Ok so I will modify the clip that I have from AMK that is olive drab....thinking a dark phosphate finish would be probably more correct.
The car I am working on is a San Jose Oct/Nov 65 built Shelby.

My Nov. 65' built San Jose fastback had this clip as well. If I remember correctly my clip was rusted but I had a nice olive drab to replace it years later (even though now it might not be correct). I thought the clip wasn't supposed to be there (#1 because I had previously only dealt with Dearborn or Metuchen cars being on the East coast, #2 because I was uneducated with the unique assembly process' at the 3 factories, and #3 if you ever scrape your hand on it's sharp edge you would think "WTH were they thinking!!".)  LOL  ;)

Best IMHO choice. In many cases they can be seen as almost black or if the plating is gone bare steel after all these years

Not a SH thing only. Later 65 Dearborn cars had it too.

They were used at all three plants. Think the answers and or finish might be plant specific due to possibly different vendors/suppliers

Good to know. My SJ car was the first I found to have had this. Was this consistent during assembly or maybe the PO s removed? Seen a good number of Mustangs , 65/66 , and only recently been educated on this.  :-[

This clip was on my SJ October of 64 car when my dad bought the car from the second owner in 1992. At the time the car only had 42k miles. I was told it wasn’t used that early is that correct?

Related comment, or maybe a question.  I think if a car had this clip it would not also have the push in plastic loop clip that could be installed just below it.  Might be a clue as to whether a car originally did/did not have this clip?
