1967 Mustang By the Numbers
« on: November 01, 2018, 06:29:14 PM »
472,209 TOTAL
325,934 (69%) Coupes with Standard Interior
  53,672 (11%) Fastback, Std Interior
  38,772 (8%) Conv., Std Interior
  22,226 (4.7%) Coupe, Deluxe Interior
  17,389 (3.6%) FB, Deluxe Interior
    8,166 (1.7%) Coupe, Bench Seat
    4,845 (1%) Convertible, Deluxe Interior
     1,204 (.25%) Convertible, Bench Seat
            1 (n/a) Fastback with a Bench Seat

Interesting how many cars on the show field are "DELUXE INTERIOR" cars, I could go on to other options (and may do so) but how 'bout that 1 fastback with a bench seat?

How about the fact that there were almost TWICE as many bench seat coupes than there were convertibles with deluxe interiors?

For some reason, I thought the bench seat was not offered in the Fastback?

I love that kind of stuff.  Thanks!

I gather the "fastback deluxe" number includes Shelbys?

If you break out the Shelbys you get a better number for the other fastbacks.
Not to demean "other fastbacks" as I own nothing but fastbacks ...

Guess this is a case where rare might not equate to desirable.  I certainly wouldn't want a fastback with a bench seat!

I had a bench seat 67 GTA in high school and I loved it when I got a girl friend!
I do not need one now she does not want to sit that close to me now. LOL

NEXT UP:

Available colors listed from highest to lowest percentage produced in the 67 model year (INCLUDING Special Paint)

 1- (15.62%) Lime Gold (73,760)
 2- (11.04%) Candy Apple Red (52,158)
 3- (9.08%) Wimbledon White (42,903)
 4- (9.06%) Dark Moss Green (42,783)
 5- (8.06%) Springtime Yellow (38,065)
 6- (5.34%) Vintage Burgundy (25,228)
 7- (5.29%) Acapulco Blue (25,001)
 8- (5.26%) Brittany Blue (24,843)
 9- (4.61%) Clearwater Aqua (21,778)
10- (4.38%) Nightmist Blue (20,704)
11- (4.14%) Frost Turquoise (19,556)
12- (3.96%) Burnt Amber (18,708)
13- (3.12%) Sauterne Gold (14,757)

19- (0.89%) Silver Frost (4,219)
20- (0.59%) Mist Beige (2,818)
21- (0.51%) Dusk Rose (2,395)

It would be nice to know what other colors were available in 67 (verified). I have seen many mentioned, often a color available on another Ford, Mercury or Lincoln I imagine but I do not wish to include "unverified" colors or color names. (Playboy Pink, for example).

I might continue to sift these numbers a bit, or feel free to add your own!

I am doing this as a "rainy day" project, no desire to break any "copyright" laws since my source is Kevin Marti's book, I will mention that again.

And the winner is -- Lime Gold!

I put off the restoration of the Shelby for a few decades as I was shuffling back and forth on color choice. It got so bad I just shelved the project.
I almost did Legend Lime when that color came out.

In the end, the car will once again be the number 1 choice -- of 1967.

Guess your referring to "available" rather than "advertised"

Guess that might take many of us looking through allot of door tags and then we would not find all of the possibilities representing what might be a very very small number of cars.  Would look at really early or late cars for some examples of colors from the year before or the approaching production year. Seems the practice was less likely as time passed. Then in some years you have the spring promotion colors that sometimes received official individual paint codes

Bottom line on the Interior Decor group, a person would more likely find a COUPE with this option back in the day than a FASTBACK or Convertible, excepting a Shelby of course, which all came with it.
Unfortunately, seeing this option on a good number of "show cars", it diminishes the "true number" to the point that whenever a STANDARD interior car is seen, it almost looks "strange" to the uninformed observer. You almost NEVER see a Coupe with the Interior Decor option at the show field which seems odd.

It still amazes me the relatively low volume of black (raven black)

Barring a "typo", I find the existence of a Bench Seat in a Fastback not only unusual, but a real anomaly (of course being a '67, what else is new ?). I say this based on 3 pieces of documentation (copies attached) ; the 1967 Showroom Options Book (typically available at Model Introduction) which shows under "Full Width (bench) Front Seat", "Not available for Fastback Models", and two Salesman's Price Books, one dated 10/17/66, and the other dated 3/10/67, both of which note "hardtop and convertible only". If, in fact, a Fastback came out of a Factory with a Bench Seat, it would be beneficial to have a copy of either the Build Sheet or Factory Invoice to document such.

Another item of interest in this discussion is the "Mustang by the Numbers". The dopy that I have is noted "Copyright 2005, Fourth Edition, First Printing", and does not include the Full Width Front Seat in the list of Options shown for either 1967 or 1968 ?

It will be interesting to see which Edition and Printing that 67gtasanjose has.

The bench seat uses stock holes in the floor, right?
So there really isn't a technical fitment issue with the install.
It just seems to be a choice made by the product planners to keep the Fastback more "sporty" than the others.

Assume all of the following happened:
The dealer ticks the box of 'bench seat' without reading the 'for hardtops and coupes only' disclaimer.
Somehow this gets past the guy in the factory reading the order card and punching it into the factory order system -- is this the guy we see in the factory pics sitting behind a computer?
Since it's not a physical fit issue, in she goes.

Maybe the reason there are so few is the factory caught up to the goof of allowing a few through and put in a software change that no longer allowed it at the factory input level.

Possible, yes.......................................but, if "if" were a skiff, we'd go sailing.

However, as I mentioned, being 1967, it seems that many things were possible.

I've been in IT for decades.
The only way to catch a bug in your software it to run test cases through it. Or in the case of something like this, have the unintended go through the system, catch it a bit late and not allow it in the future.

I've run hundreds of test cases on software, released said software to Production and have people catch things we thought impossible or improbable. And certainly not caught by our tests.
