Topic: 70 Mach1 space saver size

Hi,
 I'm trying to determine what size space saver spare is correct for a 70 Q code Mach1 that originally came with F70-14 tires. Someone on the 428 forum thought an F78-14 space saver was correct, but I have one and when inflated it's noticeably taller than the F70's. I'm thinking an E78-14 space saver is right, but I can't confirm it and don't want to make an expensive mistake...

Any Ideas ?

Just putting a regular spare in the trunk would be the best money saver.
I don't see the need for a space saver with 14" wheels.
I think F78-14 was the one though in the event someone optioned for it.
If you had the F60-15's then a full size spare wouldn't fit in the trunk using the same welded hold down bracket  provided with every Mustang for a J hook,
so the space saver is what would be supplied, but a full size spare is best if there's room for it in my opinion.

+1 . On a 14 inch wheel car a full size spare is a better safer alternative. The fact that a full size 14 inch tire will fit in a trunk easily is the logical reason Ford used them on the 14 inch cars instead of the mandatory space savers on the Shelby and Boss cars which all had 15 inch wheels.

Maybe you are under the impression that a 70 Mach I with 14 inch wheels should have a space saver. That is not the case. A space saver in a car like that is not typical .

The car was actually optioned with one from the factory, here's the Marti report...

Since so few non Boss cars had a space saver, I can't document what size tire actually came in the trunk. I have a space saver from  a 71 Mach with 14" wheels and it's an E78-14 but I'd like to confirm that's the right size before buying one.

Years ago i restored a 70 cj vert with factory SS spare & like the  late shelby boss 15'' wheel cars these 14'' factory optioned SS spare cars had the air bottle cradle spotweided to the floor same as 15'' SS cars so u have to mount the bottle & spring to be correct.

Fortunately, the bracket for the bottle is still on the floor, just kinda bent up.

I looked into what diameter tire would be the closest to the F70-14's and that doesn't make any sense either. The factory Boss F60-15 tires are listed as 25.94" in diameter but the diameter of the F78-14 Spare is 26.50", over an inch and a half taller (assuming an inflated F78-14 spare is the same size as an F78-14 regular tire) My F70-14 tires are listed as 26.24" tall, real close to the size of the F78 spare. My only concern is that the 71 Mach that the E78-14 spare came out of had F70-14 tires and I'm sure the spare was original (31K mile 1 owner car that was rolled on an off ramp)

I don't ever plan on using the spare, I just want the correct tire as this car will eventually get "rotisserie" restored.

Contact them, I'm sure they've seen some with all the 69 Cougars they've parted out.
I'm skeptical of the numeric sizing as opposed to alpha numeric for a 69 application though.

That is good documentation to have given any knowledgable enthusiast would be skeptical of the usage given they are not typical as I mentioned before.

Have you asked Kevin Marti? He may know the answer on the collapsible spare tire size.

Didn't even think to ask him, and I was just on the phone with them last week.....
