HEH Verses RUG Toploader Transmission
« on: October 14, 2018, 09:27:52 AM »
I understand the designated HEH code toploader was used in earlier FORD cars then after 67 used the RUG series toploader.
But what was the difference in the two Transmissions?
I have a HEH-BW toploader originally used in 66 289 mustang and I want to use it in my stock 69 351w mustang. (Originally the 69 used the RUG code)
When I ask they say yes it will work fine but I'm wondering what's the difference in the HEH verses the RUG

(I will be using an after market Competition Plus Hurst shifter, but haven't got a shifter kit yet)

Many Thanks

I know the same main case was used, and even the same tail housing C4ZR for the mustang up to 73 but what was the difference in the transmission of the two?

I have heard somewhere that the difference is the lack of a drain plug in the RUG housing.

RUG-E3 1969 302/351 Mustang/Cougar would be the 28 spline wide ratio equivalent to your HEH-BW, so you're good to go as far as I know.

Years ago I had been told that there was a difference of the amount of nickel content in the cast material.  Higher in the earlier casings, differential carrier housings, cylinder blocks, heads, and intake manifolds as well.  High performance applications still received the higher nickel content (such as CJ intakes and nodular carriers).  I can not confirm this information though.
