68 Smog parts ID help needed
« on: October 13, 2018, 09:19:56 PM »
I bought this at a junk yard a long time ago, maybe 25 - 30 years ago. The diverter valve is the right part number for a 390 / 427 / 428 CJ. Did the 302's use the same one? The S - shaped hose looks correct for a big block, but the other hose looks like the one for a J code. What do I have here?

A couple more pictures - are the hoses date coded?

Yes the 68 J code also used the three port version of the diverter valve

Yes I believe so but have not taken the time to try and decode the pattern

Thanks for the reply Jeff. Looking at pictures of J code cars the hoses don't seem right. I looked here:

So it is still a mystery as to what the hoses fit.

That long hose has the right shape to be the correct passenger side hose for a FE application but hard to tell if it is long enough from the photo.  I don't know what that other one is.

I see in the 1969 engine assembly manual that a PI engine of that era used a passenger side hose similar to the CJ one but shorter.  The check valve is located at the front of the head on a PI and at the rear on a CJ.  So, if that hose is too short to be a CJ style setup, it could be PI.

I don't have any 1968 manuals to look at, but the engine assembly manual shows all the different Thermactor configurations.

I  was focusing on the valve rather than what the whole (hoes and valve) may have come off of if they originally were all together as shown

So it is still a mystery as to what the hoses fit.

Guess length would be the next for identifying each hose individually The longer hose could be from a small block or big block depending on application (model car)  since we can't be certain of that at this point

That makes sense, I bought a bunch of parts from Rory Matlock back then, including some 428 PI blocks and cranks and various parts. It's too short for a 390GT / 428CJ RH side, but if the check valve were in the front on a PI then it would be the right length for that.

Much appreciated!

Add 1968 F-100 with manual transmission, as another possible source.

Yes!  In fact, I bought one of those setups.
