Did the sun visors originally have some type of plastic bushing or similar where the rod sits into the rear view mirror bracket?

Yes, There were Two separate types.  The '64-'66 ? Early one that had a Hole going thru the entire piece and was White....and then there was the Later Gray one that was more like an "Endcap" design. from '66 to '70...and perhaps used even later.

I believe that Virginia Classic Mustang (VCM) carries both.

The Early one here:

The Later one here:

For the OP's question the closed end one would be the original style. Just so the readers don't get confused with "extra" details ;)

Though he didn't provide the plant and when the car was built I found San Jose April 66 in one of the prior posts :)

Actually the open ended style was only used on the 64.5 and early 65's. The closed end style seems to have started around February or March 65 or earlier.

+1 - my late July 1965 Metuchen build was the closed end style

This has nothing to do with correctness, but I've found that the Earlier White type ones seems to work/fit better.  The later Grey type can slide off sometimes and they tend to crack after a few years requiring replacement.

Just an observation..
