starter to ring gear clearance
« on: September 21, 2018, 09:29:01 PM »
How much clearance should there be between the starter drive gear and the ring gear. When I measure from the starter mounting surface, the plate between the block and bellhousing, to the front side of the ring gear I get 11/16". On the starter I have, the drive gear protrudes 3/4" from the starters mounting surface. That's only 1/16" clearance at best. Seems a little close. Any thoughts??

As has been preached before you need to include the year (67 or 68) and engine (6,289/302 or 390/428) you are working on for the most accurate answer.

Sorry. 67, 289. Manual, with aftermarket flywheel. Ram 157 tooth, stock replacement type, bought through NPD.
