65 and 66 Fastback Fold Down Latch Cover Screws?
« on: September 19, 2018, 04:36:33 PM »
Looking for input on what owners of unrestored 65 & 66 fastbacks have found as the original hardware (screws) used to retain the thin sheet metal covers over the fold down latches.

Not an easy place to take pictures of and so many cars are shown with the seat in the upright setting making it even more difficult to see and get a good angle of

Thanks for looking and helping out. Please include when and where your example was built ;)

Having both a 65 and 66 Fastback (both San Jose, 5-11-65 and 10-18-65 builds), the screws are as indicated in the spreadsheet for 64-66 Mustangs in the Forum's library, 4 each required, 53016-S13 8-15X1/2 Oval Head 17/64, Phillips for 65 and 53008-S13 8-18X1/2 Oval Head 17/64, Phillips for the 66. Both types of screw are chrome plated and use a finishing washer 34968-S No 6, stainless (it's a tight fit).

You get "500". The garage is crowded.

Thanks Jim

The screws look like what I have minus the washers which very likely could have been lost at some point.

I picked up these replacements I think from VA Mustang but never got around to putting them on

So here is mine. Oct of 64. Mine has the “washer” molded into the latch piece. Is this an early feature?

They are painted over.

Jim, I'll take a screw out later to confirm but pretty sure the washer isn't separate.  Also if you look the piece does not have the grain, it is smooth....

Take out all four screws, turn the cover over and see if there is a "formed" base for the screw. Then use a screwdriver to knock off the washer (AMK 2014 pg 185, B-10375).

Hello,
I'm getting difficulties installing fold down latch cover on my Metuchen 65 FB as it as an offset +/- 3/8" for the correct alignment place.
I have 2 of those exactly the same issue, fold down side latch are on correct place and quarter trim panel must not go to the rear 3/8" as will be completely wrong.

question is: does my fold down latch cover be the correct one?

Thanks in advance

It looks like the outer quarter panel is mounted too far to the rear.

Thanks Jim,

quarter trim is on its place apparently, moving forward 3/8" is almost impossible as all bolts will be out of place and no way to put both bolts on pillar B I suppose. Well, if the latch cover is the correct one I can't see anything else either.

Jos,
Are you using the original interior parts?
Slightly off topic, but the red paint is too shiny. A picture of my 66 Fastback interior is attached.

Thanks Jim,
(about paint, seems to shinny on the photo, not to much really but I never saw another than black)
I saw on other post that on '65 there was a different latch cover, that difference is just on surface peach effect look or also on shape?
